At the start of the day an hour, maybe more (bearing in mind I fish rivers mainly, so am not fishing the same spot of water for more than a few casts). By the end of the day every 5 minutes due to frustration lol

Pretty quickly if the fish are rising well, I've wasted too much time in the past sticking with old favourites or flies I think the trout should be taking.

You are much better off changing and changing until you get it right, I've caught on the most unlikely flies, don't let your heart rule your head.

Don't forget your tippet too, the last time I fished a change from a 3.5lb tippet down to a 2lb tippet increased my takes two fold, a longer tippet may help, just keep working.

Regs, V..

For rainbow fishing on the lake of menteith (where i fish mostly) i tend t change the line density after 30 mins so if im on a slimline, switch to a fast glass or Di3, then if theres still nothing doing i change the type o flies so if ive got a cruncher, diawl bach and snatcher on then ll switch to a booby, blob and a cormorant or a cats whisker double cormorant and a sparkler or carron rabbit

It's not something that there is a hard and fast rule for. From my perspective it really depends on conditions and the location of fish, e.g. deep. I would not normally fish for more than a hour before changing flies, tactics..

Not that often, on the waters I currently fish the majority of the food the Trout eat is terrestrial, so the fly's I use will nearly always be a representation of these insects which are mostly black and vary from small to medium size and some daddies. I usually start with a cast of various sizes and spend my time trying to locate the fish, I have found for me this is far more productive than constant fly changes.

However when fishing for Rainbows I will usually start by fishing different depths with various nymphs and then if I have no luck in an hour or so and I still think I am on fish I will change to something different and fish either buzzers static or pull something blatant and gaudy through the water, then if still still no enquiries then I will move to another area.....

For me location is still more important to me than confusing myself constantly changing flies and trying to find what fly to use..

On rivers if the fish start rising I change often till I find a fly that works.

When nymphing I don't change the patterns I use much at all but I will change size and weight depending on the section of river I'm fishing

I tie to fish so it's the few on my patch that I have just done.

Today for instance I have three very similar flies which I know will all catch. After todays experience I'll change and tweak the pattern till something else takes my fancy and I fish and work with that pattern.

If I am really stuck and need to change things I resort to PTNs of one sort or another.

This month it has been Black Wiggle Buzzers.

It all depends on the conditions on the day.

Once an hour or 2.
