Make a temporary fit of the line to the reel John, then wind it on first, then add backing, when the spool is full, strip it off and reverse it, saves a lot of mucking about.

The reasons for using lots of backing are if you are fishing for species that set off on long runs such as bonefish or back home carp maybe, in which case lots of backing is required. The other reason is that the more backing you place on the spool the larger the arbour of that spool becomes. This helps to stop your fly line coiling. If you are not fishing for fish that are likely to strip your flyline and shedloads of backing a small amount is fine unless you want to maximise the spool arbour.
