Default What has happened to Trout & Salmon's photographs?

Scratch and I were discussing this the other week and having just flicked through this month's edition, the problem seems to be getting worse. I know that images submitted by the likes of Colin Riach are undoubtedly high quality..... So why does it look like someone at T&S Towers is taking to every photo with liberal use of the shadows/highlights adjustment sliders?? Are they or is it just appalling print quality?

This is a shame because I know for a fact that this doesn't reflect the high quality of the image files they are sent. And the photos are about all I buy it for these days; once it's coffee table status is diminished it doesn't leave much else left.

What's going on?!

You won't find T&S stashed in bushes on the way home at night though.

I might be wrong , but the paper quality would appear to have gone way down hill recently.
Could this have an effect on image reproduction quality ?

When you say this months edition Matt, do you mean Novembers?
Got mine this morning, and unless I am missing something, apart from the tip of the month about CDC flies I can't find any other fly related articles.

Files, Stephen.

Yep, plumbing new depths with this months quality, Matt. Would normally have been cock-a-hoop to see my picture of Jim and Col on Malham opening Stan's 'Boat-Fishers Top 20' article, but it looks like it's been screen-printed through a vest with jam and custard

Absolutely. A huge difference. Just another cost-cutting exercise by Bauer.

Saw that. Didn't realise it was one of yours - thought some passer by had taken it with a black cardboard box and pin!

I remember about 18 months ago seeing an odd photo in T&S and thinking, oh we're beginning to see some HDR work creeping in. Then more and more over the months, then this month - almost every image, even the front cover!
I don't know what print process they use, but it looks for all the world to me like some office geek at the press is ersing about with the toning, sharpening and saturation sliders until the image is completely nuked. Very sad.

Phewf! Just opened my copy which came this morning. That's so bad, even I noticed it...don't know if there's an overall 'mastering process' to the finish of a mag thats gone wrong, i'm familiar with such a thing in music and video, or if the new 'arts' editor has a mac with a very tired screen, or has just finished his btec in photoshop studies. So puzzled (and not at all bored) I'm comparing Crawford Little's masterfully unbenign portrait from this month to that in October's and swear I've come up with at least half a dozen spot-the-differences all within the scale of maleficient to severely austere. If you can spot them too and agree as I do that Mr Little looks much more amenable in the current issue, please let Anthony Masi know on 01733395163.

The 64 page cheap and cheerful catalogue within had better image printing than the magazine it came with!

Not just the images either: note the washed out subscriber information box - complete with blemish speckle - compared with the same page of 6 months ago. Not cheap at £3.40, but certainly nasty!

It would not surprise me if the magazine was now printed outside of the UK. I don't buy it, but If I was a regular buyer and received the lowering of quality that you guys are seeing, I'd be asking the magazine directly why the quality has reduced.
