Default Today's Fishing

Went out to Albury Park Fisheries today for a casting lesson, second time fly fishing and I caught two fish (2lb and 2 1/4lb) But both on my own flies. I am very happy and I am glad that my flies work

Does anyone else remember the first time they caught a fish on their own fly?

Nice one, great feeling isn't it. Which fly did the damage?

I remember catching my first fish on a fly of my own tying. It was a black diawl bach with a red holo rib on a drift into the causeway at Pitsford. Still one of my most memorable days fishing, my friend and I had 5 fish to the boat. It was the first time we'd really fished on the drift for any length of time, nice wave and fish were rising in the wind lanes, really exciting stuff. Still love fishing in conditions like that, always gets the heart racing

Enjoy the moment mate......i personally don't think there's a greater feeling of satisfaction. It's something that you'll never forget and I hope it spurs you on...

I started very young and tied my first fly as a kid - a baby doll that caught fish after fish even though it was really a very poor attempt at a fly by todays standards.....i will never forget that moment

Since then I've made floats, spinners, leads (for sea fishing), drop nets, rods pretty much everything, i think it adds something.....maybe i'm just gettuing old ?

Thanks for the replies, as you have said it is a great feeling.
Both fish were caught on a Blue Flash Damsel, but I lost two fish on an orange fritz, and one on the damsel.

Well done James. Very precocious, as you only went for a casting lesson!

I have yet to tie any flies; I remember my attempts at building Airfix models years ago & coming to the conclusion I am clumsy and maladroit....

Tonio

Don't be put off. I couldn't even put those balsa planes together - you know the ones where you slotted the wing and the tail into groves on the body. I even managed to break those.
But I can tie flies that catch fish. Not as good as some of the experts on here, but good enough to catch.
It's fun and passes the long winter evenings. You even get to spend money on something related to fishing whilst managing to convince yourself that you are actually saving money

Give it a go. You can set yourself up for less than it costs for a day ticket dahn sarf. (Well, more or less)

I think it is worth having a go at fly tying, it is definately a good skill to have as sometimes a fly you want is not always available to buy from a shop, and you can make your own variations on some, and as I said before, very nice to catch a fish on one of your own. Fly tying is also fun and does pass the time as Bill1 said, and it is nice to admire an evenings work

Well done James. I don't quite remember the details of my first fish caught on my own fly, but I do remember my first salmon caught on my own tied Silk Cut Shrimp (Purple Allys) and it was the best feeling in the world. I was going to say was a better feeling than something else, but at your age I'll let you find that our for yourself later lol.

Well done for today, when I first started tying flies over forty years ago, every winter I would set myself a target to tie five flies a night and so when spring came you would have a well stocked flybox to start the new season.I still do it today.........
