With such high demand for salmon this is bound to happen somewhere so its all about sacrifice. It's our own fault this sort of thing happenes and to be honest i dont really see it changing anytime soon seeing as we are know for the best salmon for eating up here in scotland.

You can't miss the irony in the opening narration......

".... It is a disgrace to those whose duty is to protect and preserve our wild creatures for the pleasure and enjoyment of present and future generations"

Now I love salmon fishing myself, but I'm well aware that sticking a hook through their mouths and ripping their tissue on the way back out (that stringy bit of mouth flesh you get) then stripping the mucous membrane from the fishes body, not only stresses it (lowering it's immune system and playing a key part in the pathogen triangle) but leaves it open to attack from bacterial infections. So, many of the fish that we all return are actually destined to die, in some cases before spawning. And we also haven't made salmon fishing 100% catch and release, have we?

So... Who's responsibility is it then to "protect our wild creatures for the pleasure and enjoyment of present and future generations."

It won't be ours then... No?

Hi,
May I ask GuyFromLaw, do you use barbless hooks?

Dave

Dave I use barbless or debarbed hooks if I am fishing somewhere that stipulates their use.

I know where you're going with this but have to say you that are barking up the wrong tree, and have slightly misinterpreted things as they are here.

I'm not the one narrating videos stating that the fish should be PROTECTED when I know for a fact that if I decide to chap a fish for the pot, it's hardly protecting it, is it? I also know for a fact that sticking a barbed double or treble in a fish's gob isn't protecting it either. I know that posing with my prized captures, for photographs to fuel yet another human emotion, bragging and pride, that I ain't protecting the fish. But like I say, I'm not the one making the videos.

So in the sense that, the video was made to be (and was) distributed amongst ourselves, the angling fraternity, to raise awareness about protecting wild stocks of salmon, so that we ourselves could then endanger their lives at best, and deliberately chap them dead at worst, in the name of sport and pleasure, is somewhat wholly ironic and hypocritical, don't you agree?

Now, that's all I said.
