Default Shrimp

Myself and theboy25 are going to Rutland next week sometime. I've seen that aswell as fry and corixa, fish are feeding on shrimps. I've got some imitations but not sure how is best to fish them. Any ideas?

Hello Mat

Look at my Kleine Garnele or "Little Shrimp". I have had very good results using it.
Here is a picture of it (you can watch my how to do it video in Youtube. You can look for it as "Pulpito Jig Series #7"). Hope you like it and you can copy it.

If you have questions, I will be happy to answer.

Having spooned a couple of fish and found them full of shrimp (some still alive and swimming around in the sample jar!), on went a dead-ringer and attempts to work it as imitatively as possible.

Not a touch

(Why would a trout want to go after an imitation with thousands of the real things swimming about on the bottom? Even if it thought the imitation was real, why select that one with so many others around, a bit like the 'chance' on the lottery?)

Back to the cats-whisker and catching trout

Sometimes something different for lunch is a welcome change.

When trout are having to compete for what's on offer, no doubt that throwing them something that they are looking for is going to grab their attention.

But when there is more than plenty for the taking, and many more as well.......

I've no doubt that chucking lures at feeding fish will get a few, but over the years i've seen many anglers stripping lures at 100mph when fish are occupied on buzzers then looking on bewildered when guys around him are pulling out fish after fish on imitative patterns.

Sometimes it's like trying to catch a sheep in a field on a blade of grass. It just depends upon how many other blades of grass the sheep has to get through before it comes to yours? Or in mnore straightforward angling terms . . . . the difficulty of getting a trout to take your Caenis imitation when the water's surface is covered in them. As you're probably aware, something completely different often becomes a useful ploy then, depending upon what the trouts' search image is.

Thanks for the Youtube video Jose, the shrimp looks like a sure fire winner. Will certainly tie a few of these for a friend who fishes the more exotic waters. And a big welcome to the forum. Best, Tim

The shrimp that the fish are feeding on at Rutland are not your standard shrimp. They are a free swimming shrimp that hang around, mostly the tower in the north arm, in huge clouds. They feed on Daphnia and are a translucent white colour. They have a small orange dot in the middle of them and 3 black dots at their head. Two eyes and a mouth i'm guessing. They have also appeared around the boat jetty at Pitsford.

The best fly for them is a small tequela blob. I kid you not! We have tried all sorts of immitations but nothing else has worked.

Thanks chickenfish, the report I've read is from rutland gillies and just mentions "shrimp" so I assumed they are normal freshwater shrimp. Suppose we shouldn't worry then if they are out near the tower as we will be on the bank?
