Bad Hydro
Friends of the River, Bakewell Against Bad Hydro
A proposal has come forward using £5 600 of public money to run a feasibility study and spin campaign to install a hydro turbine in Bakewell. The community interest company at the head of the project will be able to pay themselves personally from the profit obtained from the environmental damage and continue to further influence public authorities.
The damage will occur because of five main reasons.
1) Depleted reach. 850m of main river will lose 35% of its water during all but the most extreme low flows.
2) The screen and turbine choice are the most dangerous to fish, but cheap and easy to maintain. Fish are funneled against the turbine.
3) Increased flow down a sidechannel with encourage adult trout to run into the channel with no hope of passing upstream or spawning.
4) An established micro river, within a tail race but demonstrating all the aspects of a healthy river such as pool & riffle and meanders, has the highest population of water voles in Derbyshire. It will be dredged to get more water to the turbine.
5) A claim that the 5% by-wash provision will increase flow for young trout, when it will infact reduce the flow from what is now available by 85%
