Exclamation Bad Hydro

Friends of the River, Bakewell Against Bad Hydro

A proposal has come forward using £5 600 of public money to run a feasibility study and spin campaign to install a hydro turbine in Bakewell. The community interest company at the head of the project will be able to pay themselves personally from the profit obtained from the environmental damage and continue to further influence public authorities.

The damage will occur because of five main reasons.

1) Depleted reach. 850m of main river will lose 35% of its water during all but the most extreme low flows.
2) The screen and turbine choice are the most dangerous to fish, but cheap and easy to maintain. Fish are funneled against the turbine.
3) Increased flow down a sidechannel with encourage adult trout to run into the channel with no hope of passing upstream or spawning.
4) An established micro river, within a tail race but demonstrating all the aspects of a healthy river such as pool & riffle and meanders, has the highest population of water voles in Derbyshire. It will be dredged to get more water to the turbine.
5) A claim that the 5% by-wash provision will increase flow for young trout, when it will infact reduce the flow from what is now available by 85%

If you would like to join the newly formed 'Friends of the River - Bakewell against Bad Hydro- Forum Chapter', please indicate below by adding your name.

International support welcome.

Warren, please add my name to the list.

The Derbyshire Wye is an internationally-iconic river, and any possible benefit from this greenwashing scheme is likely to be far outweighed by the damage it will inflict on a unique ecosystem.

It's a constant source of amazement to me that anyone in the UK is considering putting hydro schemes in - whilst everyone else in the world has learned the lesson and is busily taking them out!

Thanks all. I was looking for 100 names by the end of tonight. No commitment, just your name in support for the fight against a terrible site and aweful machinery that will damage fish, probably daily, for the next 30 years.
