A variation on the re-occuring theme of "If you could only have one fly in your box". Well what about just having one box for all your flies. What would it be? and no you can't answer with seat box. Jon

I use to have a Shakespeare wooden fly box, 4 leaf and was 12 x 8 inch in size. had thousands of flies in there, all river and still water patterns. used to spend half hour just deciding what fly to use.
I have simplified matters now, reduced my fly selection. Separated river flies from still water ones. Now have 2 fly vests, one for still and one for river with 5 different fly boxes in each.
Where have I gone wrong.

Ditto, great boxes, except I have 3 of them

I've one box for dry-flies.

Another for boobies.

Another for lures.

And one containing both buzzers and nymphs.

And a small box for wet flies.

And several empty boxes, some containing spares and flies I'm unlikely to use (salmon and sea-trout etc which came in collections I won on ebay).



But I use less than a dozen flies regularly, so the boxes mostly just take up space in my bag, whilst I mainly use those flies residing on my waistcoat patch


Just don't ask about my float collections, or the boxes of jerkbaits and spoons etc, or my boat leads, beach casting leads etc!

I don,t think there,s a box big enough to take All my flies!

I had a system - I had a large wooden float box which had got very tatty and was no longer used. I cleaned it up, stripped and varnished it and replaced the old open cell foam strips with rows and rows of foam strips cut from computer packaging material. I guess it would hold 800-1000 small flies. So, when I tie flies, I put them into my big wooden fly box.

In my tackle bag, I have two of those small Wychwood Vuefinder boxes. They're double-sided, so I had one side for dries, one for nymphs, one for lures and one for buzzers. The idea was to take only the flies I needed for a particular session out of the big wooden box and put them into the little plastic boxes.

You can imagine how long that worked for. I started adding flies I needed without taking the old ones out, until the boxes were stuffed and the lures had spread into the nymphs section. I now have utter chaos.

I'm going to clean out all my flies back into the big wooden box. Then, I'm going to buy some more vuefinder boxes. Then, I'm going to reorganise them by type and venue. I can fit all the river dries, nymphs and emergers I want into one box. A box of lures and boobies. A box of buzzers, nymphs and hopper/daddies. All spares in the wooden box.
