Well, I just got back from a week on the Norfolk Broads.

Pretty dire week with an awful boat with a long list of problems and an relatively uncaring hire company. We actually cut our holiday short as we couldnt abide another night in a leaky boat and damp bedding.

Anyway, this is not what I am about on this thread.

This is;


I noticed that all non-turd waste is flushed straight into the water system. Sink, basin and shower; straight in. I was astounded.

Is this allowed?



Worse was to come when the chap filling up the boat upon our return spilt diesel over the side, into the water and the across the gunwales and simply mopped it up and then RINSED the mop in the marina

Now that, I am sure, is illigal?


Can anymone enlighten me?



No wonder the water is so dirty looking

All non turd waste has always gone into the Broads and over a hundred years or hire craft doesn't seem to have done much harm. Mind you the mud on the bottom is so thick that you can get a quant pole stuck forever. As for the oil spillage that is obvious contamination and is definately not allowed. Deck spillages should have been treated with a strong detergent and then swilled off.

Looking on the bright side, the untreated detergents that you discharged in the water should go some way to breaking down the diesel rinsed off the mop.

Obviously not a modern boat then!
Toilet waste should be stored in chemical loos/tanks which should be emptied/syphoned out and disposed off appropriately.
As for the diesel, accidents do happen, but carelessness?
