Default zonkers/minkies

hi folks,
a friend gave me some zonkers and minkies and said theyre good for the trout feeding on fry this time of year. however after casting both flies they float, and i mean unsinkable lol is this normal or are zonkers and minkies designed to fish sub surface?

I like fishing them both ways, but have had more success sub-surface. I build a bit of lead into the dressing of some to help them on their way. Others, I leave a hollow body under the mylar tubing to trap some air and help them float.

If your zonkers have a mylar tube body, no lead, and a bit of give when you squeeze the body (indicating hollowness) then yes, they'll float reasonably well!
Try giving them a good soak to get the skin that backs the fur thoroughly wet through.

In my experience they need a little bit of lead wire to help them on their way.
