Default Give me a good book! :-)

Hi all!

Im a few months into my first year as a cap and jacket fisherman........In between catching caps and jackets I sometimes like to fish for trout too.

Anyway, I'm struggling in knowing which flies to use and why I should use them etc and was wondering if anyone had any good reference books on fish diet (preferably uk based) throughout the year and why and when we use the flies we use.

At the moment I am only really fishing still waters, with mixed success.

Any hints / abuse welcome!

Hello mate,

Have a look at this;

Pocket Guide to Matching the Hatch: Amazon.co.uk: Peter Lapsley, Cyril Bennett: Books Pocket Guide to Matching the Hatch: Amazon.co.uk: Peter Lapsley, Cyril Bennett: Books

I've got this book. It's really good, well worth the money. Fishing bag sized too so you can take it to the water with you.

Hope this helps.

Nick.

That was quick!

You'll enjoy it. Good stuff on trout behaviour too like rise forms and what they mean.

Happy reading!

Nick.

I am enjoying Pat O'Reilly's "Matching the Hatch" at the moment. I always did like The Magnificent Seven!

I have Pat O'Reilly's book and the Lapsley / Bennett booklet on my bookshelf, and they are both very good. However, both are perhaps more targeted at the river fisherman, and bearing in mind...

...can I suggest you maybe look elsewhere ? Pages 60 to 90 of Charles Jardine's "Small Water Trout Fishing", or the section on natural food in Pater Lapsley's "Trout From Stillwaters", are both excellent guides to the trout's natural food in lakes.

An excellent book which helped me in my teens (admittedly that was a long time ago) is "An Anglers Entomology" by J R Harris. It shows pictures of the naturals with distribution maps and recommended artificials. It's a bit scientific but that is sometimes what our sport requires.

Tight lines.
