The Zonker is a very versatile streamer lure. The main thing is finding the depth of the fish first by counting down and retrieving at different levels. You want the tell tale pull on the Zonkers tail. Next is colour. You need to experiment with a few colours like white, black, orange and olive with a silver or gold Mylar body. Finally, the retrieve is the last bit of the puzzle. Experiement with slow jerky, medium slow strip, and a fast strip till you get pulls.

As a final touch to the good advice above, attaching the fly with this knot can add a little extra life to the Zonker, as it is retrieved.

Hi Bill

I notice you've still got your cog award. Mines gone I'm obviously not posting enough unless mine's rolled away somewhere.

Just get yourself on the three word story thread more often Fred, and you'll have more cogs than a factory making swiss watches!

Whatever way you fish zonkers, slow or fast, try to suddenly stop pulling for a few seconds, and start again .... Makes trout go mad

The 2 best patterns I have found are a Cats Whisker version, white zonka strip with fluro green/yellow body. This pattern works great being pulled fast for 2 or 3 pulls then left still for 2 or 3 seconds near the surface. The other version is an all black zonka fished in the same way, but works better when fished a little deeper.
Both patterns work even better if you add a rib of UV straggle fritz, I have done really well at Leighton in N Yorkshire with these patterns this year.

I think the best way to fish the zonker is to impart as much movement in the wing as possible.

I would recommend, as with other lures, varying the retrieve - fast, slow, long and short. But I would also recommend pausing between the retrieves as this is how natural fry would move in the water.

Others might not agree, but this is how I would fish it.
