Default Windermere

We are staying in Windermere for two days next week.

Any recommendations on where to go, what to do, where to eat etc?

There's a nice lake close by. The name escapes me just now.. can't miss it though

'The Drunken Duck' used to be a good place to eat. It's been a while though.

If you want an expensive restaurant, Miller Howe in Windermere used to be one of the best - also Sharrow Bay on Ullswater. However I haven't been to either in years.

What sort of things did you have in mind? (I'm assuming that fishing is not on the agenda)

Family stuff I guess, going with my brother and family, between us there will be 3 girls aged 7 to 10 to amuse and a dog.

Fishing might be an option, but only for 2 - 3 hours tops.

Ghyll Head is a natural looking reservoir stocked by WADAA with rainbows, very close by. I think a day ticket is about £17 available online.

Mason's Arms at Strawberry Bank is very good for superior pub dining.

Other than that there's walking up fells and messing around in boats or buying discounted outdoor clothing.

Fishing, you're very close to Ghyll Head - an attractive fishery, worth a visit - however I'm pretty certain that you can only get a full day ticket.

Ghyll Head Trout Fishery

Another WADAA water a bit further away, also very attractive is High Newton

Both bank fishing

Watendlath is over Keswick way. A very attractive spot although I've never fished it. It has a good reputation

There's a World of Beatrix Potter thingy in Windermere for the girls although I can't imagine that there is a lot in it. There is also a small cinema in either Windermere or Bowness. You'll probably have to drive to Penrith, Carlisle or Kendal for larger cinemas with choice.

There are also cruise boats on Windermere and Ullswater, I think that they run through October
Windermere Lake Cruises

Of course you can hire rowing boats on Windermere.

There's also a steam railway
Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway

Frankly, apart from walking, there isn't a lot else, so make sure that they take their games machines etc with them.
And waterproofs.
