Default Pricing for a new fishing book

Hi all -

I've been asked to do some research into what feels like a reasonable price for a new fishing book.

The proposition is an hardback, glossy full colour volume, with great pictures, about the size (maybe a little thicker than) Mike Weaver's "Pursuit of Wild Trout" or Jeremy Lucas' "Tactical Flyfishing"... authoritative on its subject, which may open a whole new window on many people's fly-fishing experience.

Suggested recommended retail prices are £20, £22.95 or £25. OK, I know none of us want to pay more than we have to, but the nub of the question is: would you be prepared to pay £25 for a properly high-quality product, assuming it's a subject that interests you, or would the jump from £20 to £25 be a real deal-breaker which would put you off buying it? And in that case, would £22.95 make any difference at all?

Many thanks to all for your thoughts!

Theo

PS: modesty (and maybe forum rules?) prevents me from saying much more at this stage, but in a spirit of partial disclosure... yes, this is a book I've been working for a while

I suppose if this is truly a new look at fly fishing £25 could be acceptable, But if its just a new twist on whats be written a hundred times before a tenner is to much, just to look at pretty glossy pictures.
Trout Fisherman is bad enough with its repeat ramblings, hope your book wont be the same.

I,m always looking for a book giving a new look at fly fishing and or fly tying and if your book does so well and good, but I,m not prepared to pay more than £20 no matter how good it is.

Shouldn't your publisher be worrying about this, Theo?

It all comes down to the value of its contents. I'm happy to pay £2 or £200 for a book as long as its worth it. Jon

Hi Theo, If I'm honest I would pay £20 for a book. Just depends on how good the content is and would I use the book info to fall on? If that's a Yes then I would stretch to £25.

Best Regards

Stuart

I don't think there would be any substantial dropoff in people willing to pay 20 vs 22.95.

Any plans to make an eBook version available? Since I got my Kindle last year, I've bought over 30 eBook books, and only 2 paper books.

I think the main advantage to the eBook format for authors is that potential buyers can try a sample of the book rather than have to just buy and hope they like it. I've bought at least 5 books after reading samples and I would have never bought any of them had I had to just hope that I liked them based on title and reviews.

So come on, what's the working title and give us a summary at least.

As has been said already, it all depends on the content. I wouldn't spend £20 on rubbish but I'm quite happy to go well into three figures for a book I really want. If it's being done by an experienced publisher then they should have a pretty good idea already, assuming it's relatively close to publication. If it's a privately published book then it will have to be a good mixture of market research, calculations based on your own costs and some good old fashioned guesswork.

I've been working for a specialist angling bookshop/publisher for a couple of years now and it's quite interesting to see what sells and what doesn't. It's not always what you might expect.

Good luck with it.

The last two hardback fishing books that I bought were both £25 (Lucas and Fogg) and prior to that £20 (Moss, Freer, Lapsley, HENDS, ) with one at £22 (Magee). Harding's book at £15 is a little different in format

If I thought that a book would "open new windows" then I would be happy to pay £25. For those that will not go over £20 there will, subject to the publisher chosen, probably be ample opportunities to purchase a copy at a discount somewhere even if the RRP were to be £25 .
