That is a pretty generous budget for someone starting out and if you are spending that kind of money, you really need to try before you buy.

Not always easy I appreciate in this day and age of internet shopping, however buying blind can certainly lead to tears, just look at classifieds on here, a graveyard of broken hopes and dreams.

A 9ft #6 outfit is a nice set up for small to medium stillwaters, however if the wind picks up a #7 will be a god's send.

How old are you and how tall are you?

Invariably people will recommend what they use themselves, yet there is a multitude of kit out there within your budget, much of it very good, plenty of lemons too am afraid.

I would suggest looking at Wychwood, Greys, Sonik and Vision rods and reels within your budget.

Gets a couple of cheap mill end lines to start with, Mullarkeys or John Norris, give them a good thrashing whilst you are learning, then step up to something better, come and speak to me or Barrio then.

Also, an hour or two with a qualified instructor is money well spent I assure you, all well and good to have all the gear but if you are casting like a spack then its no fun really.

Good luck and tightlines!

The Pirate.

Have a look at Orvis as well, they've got a sale on at the moment, 30% off a lot of rods and a couple of reels, and if you take in a copy of the current Fly Fisher & Fly Tyer magazine they'll give you an extra 10% off the remainder. On Saturday I picked up a 10' #8 rod & matching reel for £168 as opposed to £278 ; so you could either save some of your budget or go up-market.

The Pirate is talking good sense.

Have a read through this recent thread Fly rod/line weights? where a newbie asks a similar question

If you can learn to cast with 60 quids worth of kit, you won't half appreciate the good stuff. You will never sell your first fly rod, unless it's a proper turd, it will always do as a spare.

That leaves you £210 for lessons and a rod/ line upgrade if you like it.

You might wish to avoid lessons, but be prepared for an Internet dry bumming, if you even dare consider it
