Default Lee Wulff and River Lines!!

After 30 years or so, I am going back to river fishing - Clyde, Tweed et al and during my time fishing stillwaters, the amount of trout lines on the market now is, well, mind boggling to say the least.

My friend who has a Lee Wulff line for his river work, is happy with his and recommends this line for these rivers. But on checking out the reviews I have came upon this report on them and it kind of put me off rushing out to buy one, especially at the price they command.

See review here: Sexyloops' Tackle Review Section

So my questions are: is it a fussy line that requires to be mated to Rod A and B only, and if anyone has one what do they think of it?

Last question is, what do you river guys think is the best line to go for with the following criteria. Must be green or dark, Double taper, for dry fly fishing and able to purchse in 5/6 weight.

Thanks in advance guys

I think it is a pretty save line to buy, it suits a lot of rods just fine. But like all combinations it's hit and miss.. I think its best suited for river work with short to medium distance casts in mind, thats mainly due to the rather short belly.. What rod are you going to use it on, maybe some one has the same rod and can help you further..

It does come in a nice green/olive colour the downside (since you're asking for a DT) it is WF line..

Why double taper? A weight forward correctly designed will be much more versatile in use.

Hi Richard. Why double taper! Because its what I was used to before on rivers, and I always thought that double tapers gave a more delicate presentation for Dry fly fishing in particular. Where as my thoughts on weight forward were, shall we say less delicate presentation. I of course, could well be wrong on my thinking here and open to a change of mindset in my mature years.

So go for it Richard - convert me with why you would suggest a WF line is better for delicate presentation etc

The rods I will be using are Hardy Demon 9ft #5 and a Sonik SK3 9FT #5/6

Try mine first before you splosh the dosh , Kenny.

All I can say is that in comparison to a rio gold wf #5 , the #5 TT brought both my Fario and Winston WT to life.

Good rods there Brian and I will take up your offer to try, if we get the opportunity to meet before I need to buy one that is. Yes the Hardy is a 5 weight. Grey matter issue

I used to use double taper too, especialy when money was tighter than it is now! Your leader construction and your cast have more influence over the delicacy of presentation than the taper design. Both WF and DT lines should be able to make delicate presentations. A WF gives you the ability to do it in more varied conditions.

And for the sake of balance, Bruce Richards SAs line designer and all round fishing dude talks lines without trying to sell something:-

DT vs. WF - Which is really Better

For what its worth, imho some rods suit DT lines while others dont, as always its just about personal taste.
