Default Lough style fishing intermediate line

They obviously work due to the number of fish caught on Ireland's loughs. What I can not get my head round is on such a short cast the difference between a floating line and a intermediate must minimal. Why not use a HD line that would get down a couple of feet. I know there must be a reason why they are not used and I would appreciate any info on using intermediates on why HD'S are not used.

True Loch style is when the flies are cast on a slightly longer rod, over a relatively short distance from the boat, and dibbled as they aproach the boat,(on the bob so to speak) lifted off and cast out again on a relatvely short line, at a reasonably quick rate, fanning the area in front of the boat, generally not fishing deeper than a couple of feet.
The effect is a now you see it, now you dont, teasing effect on the trout, enticing a quick and savage take when the flies land again.
Is difficult to keep the action going with longer casts that have sunk quite deeply with fast sink lines.
The object being to whip the flies in and out over the frontage of the boat, (fan pattern) with minimum disturbance.
Used to be up to a dozen flies were used in this method!
now is only 3 or 4.

bert

Thanks for your prompt reply Bert I understand this but why can an intermediate make such a difference in this style of fishing or are intermediates used on a longer line?

The difference is what it is, Jeffski - a few inches - and sometimes it makes all the difference. Try not to think purely in terms of the line and how fast it sinks, but consider also the many other factors that should affect your line choice, such as - speed of drift, retrieve speed/style, depth of water, hatches/falls, light etc. Figure out where you want your flies to be and how you want to work them, then choose your line.

I presume you're talking about Ireland when you say HD lines are not used? I can assure you they are, albeit not by many. The one and only reason for that is tradition. Most of your premier fisheries are relatively shallow, and traditionally sport is hatch dependent, and on top. There will always be occasions when a faster sinking line will reap rewards though.. even in five or six feet of water.
