Default Braided leader, Furled leader, are they the same thing?

This maybe a stupid question but I'm thinking of trying a furled leader and was wondering if a braided leader was the same thing.

Many thanks for the link Eddie, I had the same question. But if I may expand on the original question just a bit, in actual use is one preferable to the other?

Fred, I only use Furled leaders, so am not qualified to comment from a practical point of view. I'm sure someone will be along to explain shortly..

Ditto Eddie, or at least that I know of .....

On my trip to Montana I loaded up a FL on a 6'6" 3wt, a 8'6" 3wt and a 12'6" 3wt two hander. Absolute treat to cast on all the rods with small dry flies.

Only 'problem' was with the 2-hander ...... at 70 - 80 feet you can't see a size 10-12 dry fly on the water. Had to watch the end of the fly line to get an idea where the darned thing might be. If the fly was a 'skatter' the 'wake' would give you an idea if there was enough contrast to pick it out.

Many thanks for the link Eddie. Confirmed my suspicions that they aren't the same thing.

Also thanks for all the replies

Just curious Fred, why would you cast a dry fly 80 feet ?

Partly because with a 2-hander you can. Real reason is I was 'bank fishing' (or rather wading up to my knees in "safe water") and the holding water was off on the other side of the Bitterroot River. Shelving out bottom on my side of the river and the deeper/cut banks were on the other.

You either had to do some (for me anyway) darned dangerous deep wading to get close to that with a one hander .... or use the 3wt two hander. Odd, but mid-river the fish were all fairly small (6 to 12 inch), off the far bank you were looking at the larger one's in most of the runs.

I just thought at that distance controlling drag would be a real b1tch !
You must know your stuff with the two hander !!

In the initial part of the drift it is; but with a rod just short of 13 foot you can keep a heck of a lot out line out of the water. Then it becomes the game of gentle mending (usually down stream) to control the 'drag.'
