I mentioned it to them, and they insisted that is the correct spelling too. Interestingly, both are in the dictionary, and Wikipedia puts gillie first and links ghillie to it. But if you Google them, ghillie gets 3,550,000 hits, while gillie gets 2,640,000.

Anyroad, in all my years (55 and counting) I've only ever seen it spelt ghillie, and gillie just doesn't look right.

Yes Manaleeto-I was quite annoyed as T&S seem to be giving more and more obscure clues every month. On reading about sea trout lures apparently some years ago there was a series of lures all with the word terror, but it seems only the "Teifi Terror" seems to be in much favour at the moment. I was a bit peeved that the answer to the clue a few months ago "angle in the water" was WADED????? And T&S is not past cocking up and not putting clues in at all which fortunately hasn,t happened recently. Just completed the October crossword a little while ago and this time the clues seem easier and not so obscure so if you,re stuck let me know. I,m hoping to win the lovely rod, reel and line combo.

The Ytahn Terror is also very much still in favour.

The correct spelling of gillie or ghillie is often brought up, whilst not being an expert from what I can gather as I understand it the distinction is grammatical. The gaelic word is "gillie"- a young boy or a servant. This is the form to use when speaking about the chap (accusative case, I think).
If you are speaking to him then you use the vocative (?) case and the word linites(that means adding the extra h), hence gHillie. In speech this is shown by changing the pronunciation and the word should be said either Billie or Villie. English has a vocative case etc but we don't alter pronunciation so it's harder to pick up.

If there are gaelic speakers on here perhaps they could comment.
