Default How would you fish a lure?

I believe it is coming to a time were the trout will be chasing fry, as a newbie not sure how to fish them, do you use a floating line or intermediate?
never used an intermediate line ( even though I have one that came with a s\h reel) only floating.
Any tips please.

David

The action could be on any line, David. It all depends on the day. And don't automatically assume a fast retrieve... very slow or even static is just as likely to succeed.

Just to confirm above, I fished today and the 2 I caught were both when I stopped to light a cigarette. So can definately confirm static works well. But again all depends on the day

Hi David

You need to find the fish and that to a certain extent determines the line and the length of leader. I'd start off with a floater and a 14' .00 leader. Your retrieve is crucial and you have to work out which is appropriateon on the day. If this method doesn't work then try an intermediate slow sinking line that sinks at 1.5" to 2" per second. Count this down from 10 to 60 until you find the fish.

Its not like your flies have stopped, just your retreive. The flies will be dropping down through the water column just like à fry diving for cover when its sees à preditor coming. À very natural way to present à fly.

How do you fish with such a long leader, I use a 9' leader and the fly line loop gets stuck in the top ring sometimes if it doesn't and goes further down the rod I cannot get the line back out without having to pull it by hand.

That's what you have to do - pull it out by hand. Which is also why it's important to have as neat a connection of line to leader as possible for when you are landing a fish.
Long leaders are a bit more difficult to fish with to begin with. It's all a matter of practice. Try extending your leader by a foot or so when you practice casting and then another foot when you are comfortable and so on.

I don't use Lures very often, but when I do, it's mix it up. Various methods of retrieve, Slow, fast, stop, long pulls, shorts pulls.
Don't forget depth...

Good point from Eddie above-don't forget depth. I fire it out and count ten, then start to retrieve slow, fast, intermitent, whatever. The colder it is the less likely they are going to be up for a sprint. Have a few chucks at ten countdown, if no action then count twenty and go through the process again. Needless to say 30, 40 and so on until hopefully something happens. You can do this with a floater ok. But rem it has it's limits and is never going to get really deep.

If you draw a blank the sinking line is the next obvious choice-same procedure count it down. Don't forget to try close to the shore, that's where the fry usually hang out. In fact I would start there. Keep your eyes peeled for fry jumping out en-masse as they dodge a charging trout. If you see it happen fire your lure straight into the area. As mentioned above it all depends on what they are up to that day and that may change as well. Good luck.

Chris.
