Default Do any of you ever take a rod with you on a sun holiday?

OK.. this is way OT for a fly forum and if it's out of order then I apologise but I'm sure one of you guys will have the answer or suggestions.

I'm off on holiday to Crete at the end of next week for a couple of weeks and my partner has suggested that I take a rod and catch some fish from the local beach/coast, for the table as we'll be self catering. I say beach or coast as I doubt very much there will be any fly fishing out there!
Now that shows you how much faith she has in me as an angler LOL!
Hmmm...more like she just wants to get me doing something I enjoy while she sunbathes as she knows that although I enjoy sun holidays, I also get bored & frustrated at just lying there doing nothing!

So, have any of you ever taken a rod while on a sun holiday and fished the local sea?
If I do take a rod, I guess I'll need a lightweight, compact telescopic rod kit which I haven't got, that will fit into a suitcase, strong enough so that I can sea fish but not overly expensive as I probably won't ever use it again... has anyone any suggestions or even links to a decent one?

Tony

Do a google for fishing at your resort, someone somewhere will have done it!

Many years ago we had a great holiday, me and my brother catching garfish all day long off a pier in agios nikolias (SP?)

The locals were using garfish as livebait to catch dorado , with hand lines!

I took one on my honeymoon.

Did exactly that last month Tony when we went to Portugal. Bought an 8' telescopic rod and reel from a local shop for under £25 (plus a few spinners) which easily fited into a small suitcase, as well as borrowing some hooks and a float from my brother-in-law and had some great fun catching an assortment of small fish including sardines and a sea bream which all tasted lovely Also, I have started spinning (with this rod) on some local rivers to keep my fishing needs topped up in between fly fishing

So, if SWMBO is saying take a rod then it would be rude not too, wouldn't it?

Go mad! take a small tele rod (shimano make some crackers https://www.tackleuk.co.uk/shimano-e...0m-p-6318.html) and a 4 piece 7/8wt, bag of spinners, tobies etc, assorted floats and a small box of clousers and shrimp flies. You'll still have room for 2 t-shirts, a pair of shorts and a towel. I expect you've seen these but they're a cracking small tackle box (ebay) 200511118871 they'll carry all the hooks, swivels etc you'll need plus with a bit of fine tuning I can get 4/5 28g tobies in as well. Ps Gary Evans are doing a travel rod with free reel offer Spinning Rods - FREE ABU or Mitchell Spinning Reel with selected spinning rods

I've had dozens of caravan holidays in this country and have always fished somewhere near where I stayed.

I always pack a spinning rod, reel, tackle when going abroad; Bought a nice Sonik SK4 9" for my last holiday to the Canaries and had some great sport with Bream, mullet and lizard fish, going away again next week and seriously considering taking the rod again
