Default Loch Fishing

Hi all

I was just having a think, I've never been fortunate enough to fish any lochs before.

When you guys mention these lochs that you fish on, how do you go about fishing them?

Are they day tickets or members only waters?

I'd love to take a trip some time and have ago at fishing some of these amazing looking waters but living in the Midlands means its a bit hard to get there I was just interested in how you go about doing it.

Cheers

Will

Before even considering loch fishing, get yourself an experienced boat partner or guide to show you the ropes. What looks like a good day from the bank may turn out to be horrendous out in the water and going out yourself at an early stage may lead you into trouble.
Most loch's are day/eve sessions (although evenings are too short now) and a pre booking is probably the best option.
If your more accustomed to bank fishing, the only similarity is that you chuck your fluff and bring in the troots, everything else is totally different

I did some Lough fishing this year in Ireland around the midlands. It was fun and pretty straight forward once shown the ropes.

I was a little surprised at the number of seasoned fly fishermen there that keep almost everything they catch. Is this the norm over there?

Im a bit confused with this one Gary are you saying that the 100 or so lochs that I have fished up here was not loch fishing, as I either fished from the bank or waded

same here, I bank fish mainly as most of the lochs in the highlands are accessible from the bank, boat fishong is an option on some of them , easker1

Sorry I just meant loch fishing in general

I can remember doing my Duke of Edingburghs Award and seeing some amazing looking lochs, I've always wondered how you'd go about fishing them

Fly, ferry/drive, hitch, take a broomstick... to the west of Ireland.

Choose an area with lots of smallish loughs, as they are usually easier to fish.Start on the acidic, peaty loughs, the fish are smaller, but hungrier. Arrange to stay for a week. Hire a boat and ghillie. Insist that he fishes with you. He will put you over fish and show you how to go about catching them.

Lough fishing is first of all about finding feeding fish.

Invest in a copy of the Trout Lochs of Scotland by Bruce Sandison, packed with all the information you'll need, a good pair of hiking boots, travel with the minimum of gear, and a compass! Hike as far as you can and you'll be pleasantly rewarded, the further from civilisation the better!!! Often you'll find that the fishing is free (always check first) and often the smallest of lochans will be stuffed with wildies...it's worth the effort
