Thumbs down Winter Weather !!

I start getting depressed this time of year knowing what is around the corner !!
I absolutely hate winter - used to love it when I was a youngster.

Since I live in the USA I was wondering what kind of winters you have in the UK? Do you get a lot of snow - what is a normal low temp? Here is a midwest USA question - is there ice fishing in the UK?

I know Byron is very well aware of the harsh winters living in South Dakota !!

I live in the State of Iowa and you never know what you are going to get. Seasonal snowfall for the winter is above 30 inches but there have been some years that have gone well beyond that mark. Snow can start in September and last until April. January is usually our coldest month with temps below -0.

Anyway , just curious ! Maybe I will not feel so bad if I know you are miserable too !!

We had some pretty extreme weather the last few winters....
last year started pretty heavy with some snow storms that completely collapsed the country (just a few inches though)... I dont think theres ice fishing around here but im in London where is warmer than anywhere else in UK, I bet top of scotland you can....

Hi MD

The last three years we have had bad winters last year started in December. I'm a dedicated winter fisherman and as long as the water isn't frozen solid I'll fish. I don't know what I do if I couldn't fish.

There was ice on the fringes but sufficent water flow to make it fishable. We also had to clear the rod rings a lot and drink lots of tea. The biggest problem was cold burn but the fish still came to the nymph in sufficent numbers to keep us going until dusk.

The snow and prolonged cold spell is a bit unusual for most of England though. Usually it just seems grey, damp, miserable and endless.

Winter before last, I was out in a one man boat, breaking a 20ft clearing of ice on my local still water (where I was working at the time) to take fish of the surface on a size 24 suspended buzzer. Happy days.
