Default Anvil Apex vs Anvil Atlas

Hi

I'm about to start fly tying, and have the hands on these two vises: Anvil Apex and Anvil Atlas.

Has anyone tried them? Any complaints?

Does it make a big difference between the rotary and in-line (true) rotary vises? Some believe that an in-line one does not provide enough space behind the jaws. What's your idea?

Could Anvil Apex be used as a true rotary, since it has the tilt adjustment?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Best
Mohsen

Hi Mohsen, i bought the apex recently and sent it back within days. The jaws are to fine for my liking and i found it difficult to get tail fibres in etc. I know lots of people rate them but that was my experience. The jaws are the same on the atlas but the angle of the head is different so i would imagine easier to use. After trying out other vices i finally settled with griffin patriot and am really pleased with it cheers jon

I use the atlas which I got from Frankie McPhillips in Enisskillen £115
Its a very nice vice to use when you get used to it, and the base or table mount that comes as standard is good.

I use the apex and really like it. I tie down to a 20 on it at the moment wit no bother and am sure it will cope with smaller. Had a size 6 2x heavy in it this morning and holds it no bother, again will hold much bigger hooks than this as well.

Personally think the rotations of this vice are spot on for the type of tying I do. It is easy to flip it upside down to tie in beards or when weaving and being able to angle it up and down so easily is a bonus.

big thumbs up from me!

Dan

Hi jon. Thanks for the commen. Hopefully this will not be the case for me, since I'm going to start from zero, and there's a lot of chance to get used to whatever I'll take.
cheers

Hey Mike! Thanks for sharing your idea. Actually I do not find may people around who have evere used this vise, since it's not on the arket for 20 years.

And do you have any complaints about? Is it well constucted, as it looks? Is there enough space behind the jaws, especially for BIG hands? And does it hold well ANY size of hook you tie on?

Thanks
Mohsen

Hi Dan. I appreciate your helpful comment.
Do you ever use the rotary techniques or ust rotate it to see behind the fly?
Cheers

I only use it to flip the fly upside down to check everything is symmetrical or to tie a beard etc... on a diawl bach. Have to say it is a cracking little vice and the pedestal is a must have for me on any vice now, so much more flexible.

I have the Anvil Apex and really like it, rotates through 360 and I chose it because of the finer jaws, this gives me more room to get my fingers in close, it has three slots in the jaws for different size hooks, a good choice for the money

Hi there,

I use the Anvil Atlas. It's outstanding, in my opinion. No complaints whatsoever.

Cheers
Stuart
