Default pike on the fly

am hoping to have a go at pike fishing over the winter, will they be interested in a fly or would it be bait.

Terry I lure fish for Pike all winter even when there is ice freezing in the rings, no reason why the fly should not work. It is a case of finding the bait fish and the pike won't be far away. Go deeper and slooooow every thing down.
I am going to try the river this year with fly only so lets hope my theory is right.

Steve.

Yes and no. Pike do not like being exhausted and the bigger pike would suffer. Then the size of flies required would necessitate a #9 or #10. You then need the right line to cast the big flies. Wire trace required and correct unhooking gear, net and mat etc.

Have a look info http://www.pikeflyrod.com/ Some useful stuff.

I would not recommend fishing for pike with a 7wt rod.
You will give yourself a lot of hard work trying to cast out a decent sized fly.

If I might suggest - Bloke saltwater rods and Burns offer 9/10 rod both are reasonably priced and good for pike.

I would have thought a 12 -13ft double hander with a skagit line with vari tips would do the business for catching pike on the fly.

Watching the boys on Chew hurling their 6inch lures on wt9/10 single handers invariably means that they have to cast from a standing position. Has anybody tried using a short double hander?

Never tried it.
I can cast my 9wt easily from a float tube.
