I'm just about to embark in the world of fly fishing. I have my rod, reel and line but need to buy some flies. I'm going to be fishing mainly stillwaters but occasionally a few streams and the Derwent.
I've been looking on Chris/Saltwater's offers and am thinking that for a tenner, I can get 3 dozen flies. That should be more than enough to get me started. I haven't a clue what to get, so I am hoping some of you guys will help me pick some.

Hi John
A pretty comprehensive selection there - see you have the viva blob but i'd add the viva lure (streamer) and the mini muddler. 10's should do.
Also, you may need....a fair wad of cash
tight lines, grey

I can't speak for stillwaters - being a real fisherman and all that, but for streams (dries) I would go for a set of Adams from 20's to 12's, some 20-14 F moles black and some of the plume thingies Buzz does. Buy the rest when you win the lottery.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. The above is a list of flies I have to choose from. Chris does 3 dozen for a tenner. What I am after is some help in choosing a suitable starter set given my complete novice status.
If it helps at all my rod is an Airflo Classic 9'6" ATFM 5-6 and my reel is a Ron Thompson Dynadisc 6/7 loaded with an Airflo WF6 floating ridge line. I paid £20 for the pair!!
I've had a few casting lessons with my friend who owns a trout fishery and have fished a few times using borrowed tackle. I now want to have a go using my own gear and am just starting to build a little bit of tackle.

Regards

John

You are pretty limited at 36 flies (believe it or not) However if i only had to pick 36 as a starter set, i'd choose 3 of each below, you'll notice i haven't chosen any lures, because i absolutely hate fishing them, and dries aren't really in season on stillwaters just now, neither are buzzers some would say, but they do make up over 90% of a trout's diet, and will usually tempt any trout.

Diawl Bach Green Rib #12
Diawl Bach Red Rib #12
PTN #12
PTN #14
GRHE #12
GRHE #14
Shipman's Buzzer Black #12
Shipman's Buzzer Olive #12
Shipman's Buzzer Black #14
Shipman's Buzzer Olive #14
Epoxy Buzzer Red (Yellow Cheeks) #12
Epoxy Buzzer Black (Orange Cheeks) #12

Good luck whatever you choose.
Best regards
Jim

Hi. I'd go for a set of hare's ears, ptn's & diawl bachs. For your next set
get some zonkers, blobs & boobies. If you ask chris i'm sure he would make you up a set. He's a great guy to deal with. Look out for the other deals he has on. Tight lines.

I dont really subscribe to the " needing 1 size of each fly in each colour

Go for as many different pattern flies/lures/nymph as you can for what the deal is. Just get 2 sizes of each, a medium varient and a small one. (lure e.g say a 8 and a 14)

Get different lure patterns in the following black/green, orange, white green, white.

Then just go to your local and throw some flies about till you find what the fish like.

Every person on this forum would reccomend different flies from that list; at the end of the day all would work and have their time and place.

but *cough* fritzy cats whisker, orange blob, shipmans buzzer, epoxy buzzer, black/green tadpole, couple of sedges and daddy longlegs

Thank you all very much for your suggestions. There seems to be some common ones featuring in each list and that is what I wanted to see.
I'll pick the most common suggestions first then try the odd one of the others.

Thanks again.
