Default River fishing?

Tackle wise what would you recommend. I'm definitely trying to run before I can walk but just having a sniff around ebay and such.

My friend has a 7' 4 wt so I was thinking this would be a good place to start.

I have spied a 2 wt rod on ebay for mega bucks and its got me curiouse.

Any hints / resources / recommendations?

Thanks

Well don't.

9' for a 5 line will suit most UK trout rivers, allowing you to fish nymphs, dries and wets perfectly well. Have a look at other lengths/weights when you can walk, and when/if you decide you want to specialise in certain techniques/types of river etc.

I'm pretty much with Scratch on this. Depends a bit on size of river. My choice for you would be 8.5ft 5 wt , or 9ft. Ignore all that 2 wt carry on.

What are you using for the stillwaters chops? Could get away with same outfit depending on the rivers as other have said.

2 and 3wts are for streams , 8'6" 4wt perfect all round river rod. full stop

try and get a mid flex rather than tip flex, easier to cast.

hope this helps

Cheers

It all depends what rivers you want to fish.
A 5# would be useless for all the rivers i fish in the Westcountry but perfect for some of the larger rivers i fish in South Wales.
I use rods from 2# to 4# most often with a 8ft 4" 3# being used the most.

I have a Ron Thompson #7/#8 9ft 6 rod. I reckon it might be ok until I figure out which river(s) I will be fishing.

I'm not really planning on going any time soon, its more for after Christmas really but thought I would start looking now.

Thanks for the hints though :-) Also keep em coming ha ha!
