Just bowsing through a store catalogue I was amazed at some of the prices, alright I know that there are a lot of rods about for the budget conscious, (like me) but there are also a hell of lot around from the big brands costing £300 and upwards.

Coming from a course background, there were plenty of well regarded rods at a lot less than the prices of fly rods, and most are longer and have quality eyes fitted not just bits of wire !

I'm sure someone can explain to me why an 8ft rod can cost £600, if it was just the odd exclusive one I could understand it better, but there appears to be plenty of expensive models about

In order of cost I reckon sea fishing gear is overall perhaps cheapeast, then coarse, then game fishing. You're right - I can't think of any coarse or sea rods costing as much as top end fly rods, at least not those you see in the brochures. Why? because its generally priced at what the sellers reckon the buyers will pay - and presumably they reckon that some fly anglers have deeper pockets or are more gullible - market forces, nothing more complex than that IMHO.

as mentioned in previous posts re same subject, is the market price for the goods.
Not the cost of production.
Try comparing car prices from various makers.
KIA versus BMW versus PORSCHE???
You get what you pay for, the "brand name" you want to own (be seen with!) and ultimately the one you can afford!!

There are plenty of top brands within other areas of angling but the point I was making is that Game fishing appears to have so many companies ( Orvis, Hardy, Loomis etc etc) selling rods at ridiculously high prices is it because it's traditionally an area of angling from an upper class background, at least that is how I, and I dare say a lot of others view fly fishing in this country

Oh and I have bought in the past 16m lengths of carbon, which doesn't really compare with an 8ft rod !

That's about the bottom line although i don't fall for it .. with anything . There's a cut off point of paying for something that does the job well and just wasting money . having despensible income doesn't mean it should be wasted for names sake.

That probably is the truth, too many people with money burning a hole in their pockets, it amazes me the amount of expensive gear for sale in the classifieds, while they keep selling the stuff they will continue to charge vast amounts
