Default Hello

I'm John from Chesterfield in Derbyshire. I'm just in the process of setting up to go fly fishing after getting the bug from my best friend. He bought Hollies Trout Farm near Honiton, Devon about two years ago and the few times I have visited, I had the opportunity to try a bit of 'fluff chucking'.

To date this is the only place I have fished and caught a 3lb Rainbow last time I was there. I now want to have a go with my own gear and plan to visit a few local stillwaters and maybe have a go on the Matlock Bath stretch of river, about 12 miles from me.

I've already bought a rod, an Airflo Classic 9'6" 5/6 for £10 in beautiful condition and Ron Thompson Dynadrag 6/7 reel loaded with a wf 6 floating Airflo ridge line. Again for £10 off the same guy.

I'm looking for recommendations on some flies for the above situations to get me started. I'll be doing lots of reading on here for the next few days in order to learn more.

TTFN

John

Welcome to the forum,
As a rule damsels, cats whiskers, tadpoles and buzzers should be a good start for you, but there is nothing better than local knowledge so dot be afraid to ask people on the bank or the fishery staff.
Good luck on your long journey into fly fishing.
Mike

Welcome!! Leave your wallet at the door and prepare to be a cleptomaniac

Good advice from MM re flies, I'd also add in some standard nymphs such as Gold Ribbed Hares Ear, Pheasant Tail Nymph, Diawl Bachs and Crunchers. They'll imitate numerous creepy crawlies without being to specific and will all catch fish

Good luck

Chris

And some of us who are by no means expert, but do our best to help anyway .

I am fairly new here myself but the best thing I have done in ages was joining this forum, you get to 'virtually meet' a lot of really nice people, and if you're lucky you get to meet some of them in person too !

Hi Johnny. Welcome to the mad house. The best advice is local knowledge, if you phone ahead of your visit, ask what flies & tactics have been working. This should be a good starting point. The next bit of advice, is buy 7 or so, fly boxes, as your going to need them, you'll understand why, in a few weeks. Tight lines Colin.
