He was using a leader with 2 droppers.
On the point he would have used as weighted fly, nymph or lure type with lead added in the making of the fly or a metal bead as a head to add weight. Next middle of the leader known as middle dropper he would have used a wet fly or nymph.
Last, known as top dropper could have been a dry fly to float on the surface or a fly to be fished just under the surface.
The weighted point fly would fish deepest, then the middle dropper with the top dropper fished highest in the water.

Hi Carpy10

I suspect he may have been fishing buzzers. The method is a floating line a long leader 18-20 feet and three buzzers placed at six foot apart. The buzzers are cast out and aloud to drift freely. Sometimes a heavier buzzer is attached to the point of the leader to help the the whole leader sink. The theory is that you are searching for trout at three levels. You need to be in contact with your buzzers and taking up slack. Takes are generally gentle. Often if you watch the end of the fly line you see an abnormal movement. This is a signal to tighten up.

One point to bare in mind is that he was fishing at the other side of the lake. It could be that that's where the fish were.

Carpy,

What you're asking for is a book! There are so many variables that to answer your plea for help in full is likely to take about a week.

You were obviously fishing a single fly on your leader; the other guy from your description was using a team, so it would appear that more than one fly is allowed at the fishery you use. Some only allow one fly. The use of a team of flies is to allow you to fish at three different depths as you have identified. It also allows you to imitate three different stages of a natural fly, eg, bloodworm on the point; epoxy buzzer in the middle, hatching buzzer on the top.

You don't say which of the flies on his leader the guy was catching on. It's rarely all three at any one time. You might start off catching on the point, and then the fish move up in the water as the buzzers get more active, finishing off with the emerging insect later in the day.

The best solution is to read as much as you can. Take one of the magazines. I know there are those on here who will denigrate the mags, but they are a useful source of information about techniques for beginners - especially Total Flyfisher which is aimed at the beginner end of the market. Watch what others do and ask them to explain what they are doing and why. If you explain your predicament most anglers will be only too willing to help. Don't be drawn into chopping and changing tackle and techniques unless you are sure it is going to benefit your fishing. Someone may be pulling fish on Blobs in the morning, but after an hour or so all the silly new fish will have caught or spooked and someone fishing nymphs or buzzers will end up catching more and better fish later in the day - something you have already seen for yourself.

Be open-minded and above all else - persist! Good luck.
