Yeah - I needed a sit down and a stiff drink afterwards!! (was sure it was going to come off....).

Interesting to see that (as with a lot of "stream-spawned" fish) it still has its parr markings on the flank.

That's a cracking fish Paul, it always amazes me how some of these fish can manage to get to that size in rivers that get polluted on a fairly regular basis.

What a magic fish.

We really must help our rivers recover.

Are you sure it's pollution thats killed all those fish as that fish looks like he's eaten all the rest In all seriousness, it's a great fish that has survived despite mans best attempts ruin it's environment and survival chances.

Ta for the comments.

As an update the regional (and national) E.A. representatives from lots of departments have the pictures and my brother (who works in pollution prevention and control for the E.A. in that region) has already prosecuted one of the main offenders twice in the last two years. Both times it has been for the same offence with nothing done to improve matters between the first and second incidents. The first one was the 2009 event that killed everything (except the eels on the bank). The second one was less serious in terms of fish killed - but that was simply due to good luck (the plant was at minimum production at the time of the spill - 5 or 6 hours later it was at full production.....).
The good news is that three Combined Sewer outfalls that are part of the problem have now been slated (as a result of my bro's feedback) for investment in improvements in the next cycle of the Asset Management Plan.

However, I think that I'll be passing on my blog post (along with a few more specific details regarding the twice prosecuted factory in question) to the local newspaper once the most recent case has gone through.
