Default Rod legth, line weight & loading

I've recently bought two 5/6 weight rods, (one needed, the other too much of a bargain to ignore) one at 9' and the other 10'. I found that I cast better with a 7-weight line on the 9' but was wondering if this would be too much for the 10'. I have been given a good quality Orvis F5WF line and hope that I can use it on the 10' to good effect. I suspect that I don't need the extra line weight as the extra length will store the energy for the cast. Basically - What is the realationship between rod length, line weight and loading?
Ta muchly,
Baloo

I think your giving yourself a headache for no good reason.Stick a line that you have on.does it work well at the distances you need.Job done.not rocket science.
9'-5/6# works with a 7#(well it would) are you short or long casting.

Jim,

I'm interested in the rod length dynamics too. Two #6 rods, one 9ft the other 10ft - if 'clinically' identically cast - I assume the 10ft would cast further????

Why?

(please don't say 'cus it's longer )

I suppose if you wish to get really technical you might find some Reasons.but in the real fishing world we inhabit,Your looking for too much info IMHO.I cannot for the life of me see how any of the above is going to help you fish better.
1= you pick your line to suit to intended target.
2= you pick a rod length that will fit your environment
3= you work out if you are going to be short or long casting(short+1 or 2#.Long ,Rod recommendation or -1#)
Happy day's

Jim

No headaches Jim! I'm not stressing on this, just curious as to what to expect. When I get the chance to chuck some lines out I'll find out more. Syon, SW London is my local water so huge distance isn't an issue, it being a long thin stretch, but dem fishies do like to sit out in the middle @ 25mtr. I use a 8ft #4 for poking around the woods at one end there, but that's irrelevant to this Q.

rod length, line weight and loading are pretty much what understanding casting is about, no small subject.

a longer one in theory gives you leverage, if you can lever it efficiently, nine feet seems to be a pretty good allround length for optimum leverage without straining tendons,

the weight of the rod has more to do with the strength of flex, ie. balance of rod and line than the length, cos the vary.

a simplistic way of looking at it is a line thats too light doesnt bend the rod enough to load it fully, a heavy one bends it too much, but a longer line weighs more so its totally dependant upon how much line you are casting,

which varies too
