Default Getting deep?

I’ve fish a local lake a few times and it’s different to anywhere I’ve come across in the UK. It’s really deep, inky black water deep, you have to fish off floating jetties and at your feet its 40 foot plus. In ideal overcast conditions when the fish are up in the water it’s fine but when it’s bright they go deep quickly – the major problem is that it’s floating line only and I’m struggling to get anything deeper than 15-20 feet and I've had the most success on lightly dressed Diawl's and Muskins which don't sink very quickly. In an ideal world I would just use a really long leader and wait a long time, but I struggle to turn anything over much longer than 20ft (It can sometimes be a bit breezy here).

I’ve been tying up a few heavyweight flies with lead and tungsten and my thoughts are something really heavy on the point to act as an anchor, a bit like the grayling boys use, with the real fly on a dropper (2 flies max allowed) or as an alternative the heavy fly on the dropper and a small neutral density booby on the point to try and fish at a more constant depth, a bit like a carpers zig-rig. I did wonder about adding a piece of leadcore to the leader to help sink the front taper of the fly line, but I think that’s stretching the rules a bit.

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

I think the fishery is taking the micky, with it's crazy rules.I would not give them my money. As they are forcing you to have to consider cheating just to catch a fish.

What about sink tips or polyleaders, would they class those as sinking lines or like you said pushing your luck?

10 ft of 20lbs fluoro as the first half of your leader, a varnished carp hook buzzer on the point and a small booby about 3-5ft above it should do the trick

Put a "fast sinking braided leader" on the front of your floating fly line......

Your still using a floating line so within the rules.

Then fish a 15ft leader of 10 - 12lb fluro....and a nice big tungstone headed fly...Cats whisker, or black & green tadpole...something with a big profile and movement at that depth...

Count to 30 and it'll be dragging the whole floating line down ! (much faster than the 20lb fluro and buzzer set up that unless it's clear will be difficult for the fish to see..)

if you want a really heavy fly or 2..just pm me and i'll send you a couple

cheers Rob

Thanks for all the suggestions;

Jim, there isn’t a lot of choice around here! I’m happy in the main fishing for coarse fish on the fly (my aim is to catch grass carp from a local lake) but every now and again I feel the need to go after trout. I have caught every time I’ve been, but when the sun comes out the takes just dry up.

It doesn’t actually mention no sinkers in the rules on the web, but the first time i went the bailiff said it was floating line – something may have been lost in translation so I might have to ask a few more questions the next time I go, I haven’t seen anyone fishing a sinker though. The fastest line I have with me is a fast glass anyway and that’s a lot of mississippi’s!

Poly leaders and heavy buzzers might help, ultimately I guess the only way to get deeper is to either learn to cast a longer leader, there isn’t any need to cast too far to hit deep water after all, or use something to sink the taper of the fly line.

I’ve never seen those sinking braided leader before, they might just do the trick. I've tied up some big Cats Whiskers in a Clouser type style with lead eyes, they should sink like a brick. I was considering how far I could cast them with an overhead lob negating the fly line altogether!

Cheers again - Steve

Not sure what weight line you're using (or the size of the fish), but if you go down a couple line sizes (say from 7 wt to 5wt), then it becomes quite easy to sink the taper of the fly line with a heavy nymph.

Class idea, make it heavy enough and maybe some beach casting pendulum action could be on the cards?! Just tell the bailiff there was a translation issue if he asks
