Default Are you a FLY ONLY angler or do you also indulge in the darker arts of angling?

I've had great fun rebuilding my tackle collection and getting back into fly fishing again after a 30-odd year break and that feeling of catching my first fish ( a 6" Roach) once again on the fly was so special and probably far more exciting than it ever was when I fished regularly.

The excitement wasn't lessened by the fact that on my first serious day out I caught a 3lb Brownie and since then I've landed a 4lb Sea Trout and other species such as a 1 1/4lb Roach, Grayling and even Pike.

All in all I can say that fly fishing has always been my primary method of fishing and it will always be that way.

However, back when I fished regularly, I also occasionally fished using upstream worm methods for trout, as well as spinning for migratory fish and the occasional Pike.
Since coming back, I've also indulged in a spot of the above and even some dead bait piking and have had some surprisingly good catches and to be frank, I've thoroughly enjoyed it but, it just doesn't hold the same level of interest or give the same rewarding feeling as does fishing with the fly.

As stillwater fishing holds absolutely no interest to me whatsoever, I suspect after the trout/migratory fishing season ends, I will be indulging in more none-fly forms of river angling including even having a go at river coarse fishing, particularly for Barbel and Chubb - either that or give up until the beginning of the new season which having got back into it, I'd rather not.

So, are you a die-hard fly-only angler who will never enter the dark world or, do you also indulge in any of the dark-side methods of angling and if so, which methods do you fish?

Tony

I'm a die hard fly fisherman as far as trout are concerned but fish any method for salmon.

I have recently had a few trips to Scout Dyke, an any method trout fishery. Some of my mates, all fly-fishermen, are members and have encouraged me to try spinning for trout.

I was reluctant at first but, after several visits, bought a spinning rod.

It's OK to try when there's a lull in the fly-fishing. I've caught quite a few now and was surprised to see how effective spinning is and how vicious the takes are but it will never compare with fly fishing.

There's also a lot of perch to be caught and a good sized fish makes good eating.

I like all angling i have tried , i like beachcasting especially with light tackle ,boat fishing can be a buzz also . course for the usual plus pike etc .. Never fished for carp though .

i'm getting into this fly lark as i like the idea of being "busy" doing something as sitting course fishing has started to get stale for me now after 30 years. I thinned my gear right down to a small rucksack and small rod so i could mooch around which re lighted the flame somewhat but after learning people were using fly gear for the same course fish i have decided to concentrate on fly ..

I like fishing drys & wets, but will turn to the black art of lure fishing. I'll even fish a blob!

I have chosen to fish fly only but have fished many methods in my life , Fly fishing is just the best way to catch trout , Dries , Wets and Buzzers.

I have nothing against any other method , Flyfishing is just my choice!

Fly only, never done any other sort of fishing. A guy who lives on my street wants me to go coarse fishing with him but I don't know the first thing about it so he will have to teach me! I can't see it being as enjoyable as fly fishing but you never know

Definitely an all rounder. Fly fish for grayling and trout mainly but like to crack out the Avon rod for barbel and chub early in the year and a bit of carp fishing as well. Off for a week's carp fishing in October and am really looking forward to it.

Why do you put the fly rod down in winter?!? Get out there and fish for grayling!

I will fish any method and i target all different species.

I was pike fly fishing last week and in a couple of weeks i am booked on a boat with Ronnie campbell in Oban for skate fishing.
I am looking forward to trotting a worm for grayling this winter and i hope to try my hand after some barbel when i get time.
With the fresh rain this week i will be out fishing for salmon after work, depending on the river level i will be fishing the worm, spinner and fly.
In between times i will cast a fly for the odd trout when i get a chance.
