Default Anyone know how to stop rod joints coming apart when one casts?

Three years ago I bought a Shakespeare starter outfit from Argos which included a cheap 8 ft 6" rod, plastic reel, leader and backing. The trouble was the first time I cast it the joints between the end and centre of the rod came apart and if I hadn't had a fly tied to the line I would most likely have lost the end section. As I used to buy Shakespeare equipment in american many years ago I felt this was a faulty rod and sent it back to be replaced, but upon taking the replacement rod out it did ecaxtly the same thing and continues to do so. Does any forumite have any idea what I can do to stop this or should I just superglue all sections together and forget about having a "portable" rod? Or barring that throw the bl--y thing away altogether?

They say candle wax on the joints solves this, never tried it myself.

Best regards

My old man had a rod a rather old one that had this same problem, being a rolling tobacco man he used 1 green rizla on each outing to secure. Rod never failed him haha

I agree, rub the joints with candle wax,Then take most of it back off again.(you just want a film of wax)
If this does not work, do what the salmon anglers do.and tape the joints with Electrical insulating tape .works a treat.

The first time I tried candle wax on rod-joints I thought I had found a "miracle" as,used sparingly, not only did it make joints stay together it helped "dry and tight joints easier to get apart ??????????". How could that be ?. A small section of candle now forms part of my regular kit when ever I go fishing and it has regularly helped others with their rod-joints.

Tolerances on el cheapo fly rods are notoriously inaccurate. Wax may provide a temporary solution, but for a final (and drastic) remedy, you need to remove about 2mm from the female ferrule. Wrap some masking tape over the ferrule and with a junior hacksaw, whack the desired amount off the section. Dress with some fine emery paper and pop a lick of varnish over the end. Hey, it was a cheap rod to start with, what's the worst can happen?
