Yep I know a little, doubt it's going to help though. It used to be owned by the woman who lives in the house beside it. There is a small river/brook comes out of the lake and flows under the road bridge close to the house. The pool in front of the bridge holds some good trout 1-2lb. You have approx 3 mins to fish (worm) before she sets the dogs loose-they bite! The dogs can be out-accelerated quite easily on a bike providing you hear them coming. Really, if you can get one fish out it's time to leave.

That was how it was 47 yrs ago when I last fished it. Things may have changed .

Some years later around 1970 a syndicate owned the rights. I was passing one afternoon when a man shouted me from a boat to hang on there, I waited and watched as he played a large brown trout. It took ages to land it. Eventually he rowed over and asked me to use his camera and take a photo of him holding his prize...10lb it weighed. I'd never seen a trout so big. He told me his name was Miles and he owned a shirt shop in Wellington and I could have a free shirt for photographing the trout. I must call in some time and claim my shirt. Of if you are reading this Miles-pm me .

There used to be a post office in Sambrook village, if it's still there they will know about the lake. Hth.

Chris.

I have been a few times, the lake and attached fish hatchery is owned by a farmer. Access is by invitation only and the same anglers have been attending for many years.

For reasons of low water, I understand that Sambrook is temporarily closed at this time.

Invitation only? ah, that would explain why I've never fished it then, despite living locally, they'd have to be mad to invite me I've heard it mentioned in dispatches and spoke to someone who'd fish it a few times, but since its only a small water I think, I've haven't bothered investigating further. Now, if I could get onto Aqaulate Mere that'd be a different matter! (not trout obviously though, I think it was a pike/carp syndicate from oop north had the fishing access last time I looked into it, presumably agreed with National Trust now)

Aqualate mere is a nature reserve run by Natural England now, although I think from I remember its a syndicate water as well.

Natural England - Aqualate Mere NNR

Moss Pool , part of the National foaling bank estate also went syndicate (carp and pike), although it has been many a year since I fished that place. I'm going back in a couple of weeks so will have to have a recce.

Sounds about right, I'd guess him to be around 70 now. Bit flash, quite loud.

Chris.

Sorry, yes I meant Natural England, not National Trust I walk the dog round there sometimes with the kids, they put in a very natty bird hide a couple of years ago - accessed from the public footpaths on east side of the estate, from a car park area off a side road from the A518. I read that there was a big fish kill/loss at Moss Pool a while ago, sounded pretty bad.
