Thumbs down Orvis unauthorised payment WARNING

I have just checked my PayPal account and noticed that Orvis had set up a subscription debit on my account for £129.55

The only contact I've had with Orvis has been to buy a Battenkill reel with spare spool two weeks ago. No other purchases (or subscriptions) were knowingly made.

I suggest that if you've recently purchased from Orvis and paid by PayPal, that you check your account to make sure that you haven't also inadvertently set up a subscription payment.

Orvis have obviously taken my PayPal details and set up an annual subscription without my knowledge.

I've also noticed another unauthorised subscription by UK Government Auctions (every six months).

Why don't PayPal notify the account holder when subscriptions are set up? Every other transaction results in an email to me advising that its happened
PART OF THE REASON I WON'T USE PAY-PAL!!

I've deleted this as it's not really to do with fly-fishing

i have paypal linked to a bank account that has nothing at all in it . if i want to purchase anything using paypal , i go and put the money in first so there is never anything really left in bar a few quid.

bottom line , don't link a used account with e bay or paypal .. use a specific bank account just for the net ...

I'm calling the Orvis Customer Services on Monday to find out what their excuse is.
Wouldn't it have been a good idea have called Orvis for a response before, possibly, libeling them in public?

In hindsight, maybe. However, the only transaction that I've knowing made is the purchase described above, and the subscription only came to light by luck. Two separate payments for £88.25 (reel) and £41.30 (spare spool) were debited from my account, which is as expected. What wasn't expected was a subscription authorisation for £129.55 to be taken at some future date as requested by Orvis.

My original post (OK, rant) was to warn others who might have bought from Orvis and paid via Paypal that they should check their PayPal account for other charges lurking behind the scenes that they might be unaware of. I'll review and edit accordingly.

Phideaux, what puzzles me is the amount you paid for your reel and spool add up exactly to the amount Orvis debited from your account (88.25 + 41.30 = 129.55). Maybe you (accidentally) paid for your gear twice or Orvis made a mistake, charging you twice? If so, I'm sure they'll rectify it straight away on demand.

Regards,
Johan

Yup, I am aware that the totals are the same. From the information provided by PayPal, Orvis charged £129.55 for the items but also set up a separate "pre-approved payment" subscription to be able to debit from my account as and when they wanted. I've now cancelled this authorisation. I was somewhat incensed as this is exactly what GAUK did (yes, looking through their small print, by having a six month trial subscription they were allowed to do this, but it still resulted in £100 going out over the last year that I was unaware of).

It may just be Orvis' system, but I don't like the idea of someone being able to request money without telling me they're going to - at least with a Direct Debit they have to tell you if a payment is being requested.
