Default line weight/tippet/hook size

I'm going to have to fish a 7/8wt rod and an 8wt line until a new line arrives for a 5wt. I would normally fish 7/8lb bs tippet minimum and not lower than a size14 hook with that setup. What do you reckon is the lowest bs tippet and hook size you can go down to with it?

Don't take this as Gospel but I find I can manage to go as low as 5lb fluo tippet with an 8 weight, but that is as low as I would go personally with that outfit.

Sorry forgot to mention hook/fly size 14 is the smallest I would use.

Old adage. In general.Don't go more or less than 2lb from the line rating.IE:- 8#=6lb to 10lb.

Thank you both. A good rule of thumb - I'll remember that (I hope).

Maybe a daft question. But would that matter if it were mono or fluoro? Just asking because of the difference in diameter.

This was tabled in the day's when there was only Mono and the X system. But I think it is still a good rule of thumb. The x system still applies.(which is to do with diameter rather than BS)

I'd never heard of this , but it does seem logical.. Something else learned via the forum. I think I will adopt this rule in future.

With our modern leader materials I am often fishing with 10lb ++ bs ,thats on a 5/6 outfit, its the same diameter as the 1970s nylons I used back then ,Winfeild the Woolworths brand was a favorite ,quietly recommended to me by Arthur Cove one rather damp afternoon when he was delivering maggots to Hardy's shop on Pall Mall .Saved me a few pennies back then

doesn't really matter about the line weight etc, it's down to how you fish, I personally dont go lower than 6lb due to being heavy handed, but my mate fishes 4lb all the time with this line weight and lands HUGE fish regularly.
