Default Problems with Orvis tippet line?

Hi folks,

Is anyone having or has anyone had problems with Orvis Tippet line breaking easily at the knot?

I tied a length of new Orvis super strong 4X tippet to the end of a tapered leader tonight.. Very light pull and it broke.. thought it must have been me doing something wrong, so did it again... same result.

I know its not the knot as i have used the same knot for many years with no problems at all...

So i did the same know only this time using some old Drennan 4X tippet that is at least 8 years old, and its perfect. no problems at all..knot looks good and its strong.. a hefty pull and no problem..

so i tried one last time with the Orvis stuff, and again a break with a very low rate pull..

So why would the Orvis line break and the Drennan line be ok?

Anyone know why this is?

By the way I was using a double sided 3 turn nail knot..

Cheers

Keith

Keith,

I don't have an answer but could you specify which of their tippet range it was so I can avoid it - Mirage, Super Strong, AR?

It was the Super Strong range mate.

Strange you should say that because I had the opposite problem. I put another popular tippet on last week and couldn't get it to behave, blamed myself and reached for some orvis super strong 5x. No amount of yanking affected it, rock solid. I experiment with all sorts over a season but usually come back to super strong, never known it to be knot fussy. Maybe your spool is a weak one for some reason. Give it back to Orvis and try again, that's what I would do.

Chris.

Sometimes even with spit you can get a little dry bit that heats up as you tighten. I've had the same problem but found that if I did the knot again with an extra effort to ensure the spit got in everywhere and drawing the knot slowly to tighten it and then testing it after with a good pull or three all worked out fine. My knots of choice are four turn water knot tippet to leader and Grinner knot fly to tippet.

I tried Orvis Super Strong 4x (6lbs BS) a couple of seasons ago. I tried a variety of knots all of which were poor - I binned it!

I've tested a variety of copolymers and fluorocarbon lines, non of which have proved fully satisfactory.

If you're specifically looking for a copolymer you should try Middy, Lo-Viz, Fluorocrystal. It's a fine-diameter copolymer line with a little stretch that gives it good knot strength ... and it's only £4.50 for 100 metres.

I think you'll find line such as Drennan and Maxima to be far more reliable than many of the copolymers and fluorocarbon lines on the market.

Orvis will replace the tippet no problem if you contact them even via an online retailer.Have not experienced any problems with Extra Strong/Super Strong.I use mainly 3X and use Fig 8 for dropper and tippet joins.Obviously there is a problem there somewhere. What is the line you are joining the tippet on to?
Maybe try joining two lengths of the Orvis tippet together and see how it stands up.Seems like a Quality Control hic-up.I know several folks who religiously use this tippet so it is an oddball for me.

I pretty much use Orvis super strong tippet in the 4x to 7x range as my first choice and have never had a problem.

Orvis will replace your tippet spool with no quibble if you get in touch.
