Default What Else Do I Need ?

As a complete beginner I am unsure as to what tackle I need to get me started, I have purchased a 5/6 rod and reel off this site which comes with 3 spare spools filled with floating, intermediate and sinking lines, I have also got a collection of different flies coming from Saltwater Chris.

What other stuff do you recommended to get first, not sure about leaders, tippets etc and any other tackle which I should look to purchase first.

Thanks In advance

Are you fishing stillwaters or rivers?

You'll need a net for sure, as well as some polaroid sunglasses. a Priest too. some leader material wouldn't go amiss either.

Better tell us what kind of fly fishing you'll be doing.

but you will need
Waterproofs and hat (hat may help in keeping off glare but protects your noddle from ill directed flies - remember, they can be travelling at 100mph plus)
Glasses of some kind to protect eyes from flies (polarised sunglasses can be very useful under some conditions)
Fishing waistcoat (vest) if you like the idea but a jacket with voluminous pockets also works
Waterproof footwear - even if fishing stillwaters it can get muddy.
Waders may or may not be needed depending on where you're going to fish.
A fishing bag is useful, even if only for your thermos and butties. A rucksack will also do.
A flybox (or several)
A priest if you intend to take fish.
Floatant (eg Gink)
Sinkant (eg Leedasink but you can make up your own if you want) Holders for these can be bought for your vest
Scissors and/or snips (fingernail clippers will do)
Forceps for hook removal
A zinger to hang it all from can be useful
A sewing needle for clearing out varnish from the eyes of flies
To begin with some tapered leaders (9ft is probably an adequate allround size)
Some tippet material - size/type will depend on where you are fishing and for what.
Midge repellant - worst is well over now.
Suncream
Landing net
Amadou is good for drying flies, but a piece of genuine chamois will also do the job.

Book of good excuses for your missus
a) for all the money you are about to spend on a highly addictive pastime
b) for persistently sneaking off fishing and arriving home long after dark

There is no end to the gear that you can acquire, nobody ever has enough, but really there is a lot to be said for keeping it simple.

Just seen you'll be fishing rivers and saltwater so sinkant probably not necessary . If you are going to wade, a wading staff and preferably a life jacket of some kind. A chest bag can be very useful when wading.

one thing i feel ( as a newbie myself) is defo polorised glasses , i'v never used them before in fishing but they really do make a difference looking into water and the obvious not loosing an eye .. whizzzing hooks back and forth they really are a must especially for us newbies..

Good observation Billy_It still amazes me the number of anglers who wear no hats or glasses or both. In my experiences fishing I've seen kids hooked right next to their eyes with a treble hook, a hook in lips, cheeks, neck and scalp. Fortunately my worst incident so far is broken glasses lens which proves the point all too well. That broken lens could so easily have been my right eye!

Apologies for not giving more background detail, I have been course angling for many years and so Items like bags, Polaroids, landing net etc I'm good to go it is the fly specific gear I am wondering about.

Some great answers, that is a long old list Bill, the stuff like Gink and Sinkant are the type of things I wouldn't have thought about so thanks, my set up is a 5/6 rod and reel as I mentioned, what would be the best breaking strain leaders and tippets to go for ?

Probably will be doing some wading and have heard good things about the Bisons, not to clued up about the vests though as their are so many around I wouldn't know what is a good or bad design so some recommendations would be good.

As for excuses for the missus, I have just about exhausted all of those over the years, she just accepts now

Firstly, I got a pair of bison neoprene waders (not breathables) and so far they've done well. certainly a lot cheaper than some. If you just want a cheap pair of rubber thigh waders for going on with, Aldi have some in at the moment.

As for leaders and tippets
Well, it's one of those questions. It depends on your rod's action and line rating, the size of river you're fishing, the size of fly you're using, the size of fish you're likely to run into, how spooky the fish are etc etc.
Then there's breaking strain, diameter, material........
Then there's personal preference (prejudice)
For starters
Have a look at this thread
leader make up for river fishing

and this link.

have a read and then ask again.
