Default Which leader?

I Mainly fish on chalkstreams in south wiltshire Nymphing and dry-fly for brown trout and grayling. I am currantly using a 9ft 3lb 0.16 diameter Leeda Profil taperd leader.
Does aneyone have any suggestons in the way of a better leader within £5 or less range?

My currant problem is getting wind knots and the leader subserquantly breaking at the knots

Thanks for any suggestons

'Wind Knots' are often down to casting technique.

Many leaders are available for that price - Snowbee 3lb 9ft have been pretty good to date at £2 a pop. A forum member was fishing with me the other day and recommended Caimore leaders coming in at about £4.24 for 4 on ebay Caimore Tapered Leaders - 9ft No Droppers Choice of BS | eBay

They suited him well and I have now got some to try - at that price you can 'wind knot' to your heart's content

I bought 10 leaders for £10 from Grommit on this forum. They are excellent.

I dont know because thease profil leaders work out at around £2-3 a pop and are really quite good but just have found that you really pay for what you get in comparason to some cheaper leaders that i have baught in the past that have been more rigid and have gained far more wind knots ect. (I have also found some makes noticibly affect my accuracy)

Thanks james

James - I have used the Profil leaders and I don't think they are a good as the Snowbee product (for example) to be honest.

I do understand your reservations, it can often be a personal thing, however I believe a stiffer leader (not that I believe one or another is stiffer or not) would help turn over, not hinder it.

Please don't take this the wrong way if I repeat this (well you can if you wish ) but 'wind knots' are usually down to the caster rather than the leader - you may be spending 5 quid a time on your wind knots instead of 10 for £10

Opinions vary of course, mine is just one - I shall close my cakehole now

Hi Guys, your leader serves one main purpose, to connect the fly to the fly line. But if you were to simply use one level (same diameter) leader from the fly line to the fly, you'd run into a few problems. When you cast, part of the leader's job is to "Turn Over" your fly. In other words, the leader should straighten out, and flip the fly as far away from the tip of the fly line as it can, so you can control the fly, have a tight line to set the hook, and so the fly isn't right next to that thick fly line that might spook the fish.
In order for the leader to turn over the fly, it needs a certain level of stiffness, so its usually thicker. But a thick leader will be either too large to put threw the eyes on smaller flies, and when its in the water beside the fly,the fly won,t float naturally.
Tapered leaders solve this problem by giving you the best of both worlds- a somewhat stiffer butt section fastened to the fly line, and a thinner part down by the fly.
Also lads,(and ladies) all leaders will knot at some stage, just some leaders are easier to un-knot (like mine) just try keep an eye on your leaders maybe every 8-10 casts and look for knots,if you spot them early they can be untangled easier, use the point of your hook to catch in the knot and pull apart slowly,do this carefully to avoid damaging the leader.

P.s i sell 13 leaders for 10,with a lot of great feedback on them, have a look in the classsifieds section on the forum here.

I recently purchased 4lb 10' leaders from David of Platinum tackle for nymph and dry fly and they are very good.

To pay £2 plus for nylon tapered leaders just does not compute.

Wind knots happen to the best of us and are all part of casting a fly sometimes. Slowing down and not trying too hard with the cast definately prevents alot though.
