Default should i be able to snap a rod in half whilst casting ?

went out for a bit of a practice before .. had about 15 foot of main out the tip , rod just cracked into 2 pieces after pick up and on a back cast ,

ok it's a cheap rovex rapport 6# but i wasn't putting any pressure on it to speak of .. i could understand maybe if i was giving a rod some serious stick but that wasn't the case . iv got cheap rods i use for mooching with and they get hammered and abused but never snapped one not even with a lump of a fish..

i know i will get what i pay for but thought it would of been ok for a starter/practice job ..

I once had a Shakespeare Oberon rod snap whilst I was casting. I think there may have just been a flaw in the carbon blank. I had two identical rods, one of which is still OK - after 20 years service!

Unless you were casting with some type of weight or bead headed nymph and managed to hit the rod with it then I'ld say the rod was defective. Send it back for a refund or a new rod. See if you can't get the Shakey Oddyssey XT you were trying to order in the first place.

Take care

Send it back and ask for a refund, then visit John Norris and get the Odyssey XT.

Maybe you should get some casting lessons to see if your technique is at fault

i have e mailed them .. i hadn't even got a leader on , i had just threaded the main line and had a few warm up flicks before putting the leader/fluff on ..

its snapped about 6 inces below the joint on the butt side of the 2 pieces. I recon to get it to snap there would need some considerable force .. i will see what they say ..

sounds like a duff un or just a very bad design/quality.

Unless you have one of the most unorthodox casting styles this side of Jupiter then I'ld say a flaw in the rod for it to snap that low down.

Take care

what i thought .. not to worry , like i say it was a cheapo but still figured it would be ok for practice and to kick off with .. i have rods here that cost less than £10 that i have had for a few years and they are great ...

i will see what mullarkies say , at the end of the day it's just inconvienient as i had a couple of hours to kill and thought i would have a play ... better for it to happen on the fields round the corner from me than out at some lake or river or wherever.. that would be a bummer ..

No way should it break there unless subject to some considerable damage before. the rod is clearly defective. It's not necessarily true that you get what you pay for. i once snapped a Sage like that, and an Orvis Trident, but my old whisker kevlar goes on and on and on.

As others have said, get an odyssey.
