Default Decent tippet material 6x, any ideas? Mine is rubbish!

Hi,

I'm a newbie, some people will have seen some of my posts in the past.

This question is about tippet material. I bought some flextec flourocarb 5x tippet material off eBay and to be honest I think its pants. Not even sure if it is flourocarb. When I run my finger down it it feels nasty, like its got lots of imperfections in it or something, its not smooth as it goes through my fingers if you know what I mean.

Not ever used flourocarb before i'm not sure if this is the case with all of it. Its also broken a couple of times at strange places just after i've tied a bit on to my leader and pulled it to test the knot.

I've been fishing nymphs with an indicator on about a size 16 hook, the tippet material just fits through the eye of the hook. I want to try fish a few midges on a 18/20/22 hook and I dont think this leader material will fit through the eye + I dont have much confidence in it now either.

So to make a short question long, can anybody recommend any good 6x tippet material, as high a breaking strain as possible without getting too pricey. Am I right in pressuming the 4x/5x/6x etc ratings are just talking about the diameter of the line and not the breaking strain?

Chris, try this stuff, I can't see beyond it TBH, never let me down, and 100 metres for £3.99, very strong and thin.

Firstly the 4x,5x etc does refer to the diameter as you have suggested. I don't use fluorocarbon, but that's a personal choice. I use copolymer for my tippet. Choice being, fulling mill or Orvis.

You will get lots of differing opinions on this. In the end it's what you are most comfortable with. Good luck

Eddie, I have no idea what the difference is between the 2 of them.

I just want something thin strang and something that will sink a little

Just basically need something I can trust and get through the eye of a small hook.

I fish river by the way, normally quite fast flowing but there are some slow deep pools around. Which is the better material in them circumstances?

Both the products I mentioned are as good as each other, the Orvis is darker in colour, sort of green effect. Fishing Nymphs then the copolymer should sink no problem, but this will depend on their weight.

Mr T is your river man, heed his advice.

Ultima Power Match Co-polymer for me, like Mr Trout non fly fishing branded tippet but does a good job and has a decent price per 100m

Ok thanks Eddie,

Might go with the Grommit stuff then. The 6x stuff at 3.6lb breaking strain seems pretty strong for 6x so will have a blast with that.

Thanks for all your help
Chris

Haha....just too many choices now. As I say i'm new to the fly fishing so it probably wont make much difference to me, just need something small enough for small hoooks and reliable.

No Chris, not flouro, mono based I think, I use for the dry fly.
