Default Advice on new rod

Hi

Im looking to buy a new rod and was thinking about the sage z axis as its on sale at the minute anyway im not sure what weight to get i was looking at a 9ft 6 #5 but am a bit worried its to light for large reservoirs which i mostly fish am i wrong in thinking a 5 is to light for fishing big waters sry if this is a stupid question im a newbie. I do like the idea of a smaller lighter rod im currently using a greys gs #7 which is very heavy. I dont fish lures only dry and nymphs

thanks
Craig

Apart from windy days ,A 5# is suitable for what you intend to fish(dries/nymphs)

Hi Craig

No problem. Just remember not to use too light a leader i.e. breaking strain if your expecting fish over two pounds.

Do not but a rod until you have had a cast or 2 with it. you would not buy a car without giving it a test drive. I had a 10ft 7#Z axis and hated it, not to say its a bad rod just did not suit my casting style. Rods are very subjective, one mans meat etc

I've always liked this quote from American author Robert Travers

"...buying a fly rod in the average city store, that is, joining it up and safely waggling it a bit, is much like seeing a woman's arm protruding from a car window: all one can readily be sure of is that the window is open"

Wink Re: Advice on new rod

Hi Craig,
The advice given, thx Jedi, is sound - try it first especially if you really want a Sage z Axis cos they ain't cheap! Spending hundreds on a rod doesn't necessarily improve your strike rate - the fish can't see the price tag -so try a few different rod styles ie flex points, length etc in the weight you want or try different manufacturers with allegedly the same spec, because they will feel different. Don't stress on it though.
And, it's always fun to go out window licking - I do it with camping kit all the time.
