Default Newbies first trip out, how do I fish it?

I am having my first trip out on my own tomorrow, I have had two lessons on a well stocked Stillwater were I caught fish on buzzers, lure and dry flies all on floating lines, but now I have got a panic on after reading up on the water I am going to fish, Maran Lakes in North Yorkshire, they are talking of fishing droppers with multiple flies so know I do not know how to fish it or with what flies, I don't even know what half the flies I have are called apart from some buzzers, shipman buzzers, klinkman, sedge and some that look like daddy longlegs.
The lines I have are floating, sink tip and intermediate, all in # 5/6
please help me with how to fish it, oh and it's going to be windy tomorrow.
David

First of all don't panic. Fishing is meant to be fun.

The best advice is to ask the fishery owner or manager when you arrive in the morning. If he is any good and Wants you to return he/she should set you straight. Show them your flies and tell him what lines, they may want to sell you a few days"hot" flies that's uptown you if you want to invest.

Unfortunately these things get learnt from experience so keep your eyes peeled and watch the water.

Maran is very well stocked with fish that fight well - if windy, with a ripple, try a dry, klink, daddy etc. hares ear and muddler should also work well below surface. i've found at Maran that natural colours are well received rather than flashy lures, buzzers in brown black etc - but that's just me.
let us know how you get on - tight lines

Hi david being from scotland i cant help you with the venue but you cant go wrong with your buzzers they will pretty much catch fish in every weather. When you arrive look at the water if there is plenty of fish rising or it is warm use your floating line with the usual flies (i normally start with a damsel on the point and a silver invicter on the middle and a kate mclaren on the top or bob fly but if you are new i would just fish a damsel or any other lure on a 10-12 ft leader. if there are no fish rising or it is cold use your intermediate line with the same setup as before. or just to confuse you even more if it is relly cold winter ect or sunny/bright you can use a di7 or fast sinking line with a lure or boobie fished slow which will catch fish.
Hope this helps you as this is just a few methods you can use and part of the fun of fishing is finding out what works and what doesnt and it varries for everyone
dont let it confuse you to much and most of all have FUN and hope you catch fish. you can let us know how you get on
Regards,
Tom

From what I understand there is nobody at the lodge, you just sign in the book and post your money in an envelope, is that correct Grey?
I guess I will just fish it like Kilnsey were I caught ok and have confidence in my ability.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

David

Hi,

My advice would be relax, enjoy it and have fun. Fishing is for pleasure, don't worry about it.

Check the catch book/signing in book. When you sign out you probably have to write your returns in i.e how many fish caught and on what flies. This can give you a lot of information if you look through it and check over the last few days. Try using the flies that have been catching.

If you are not confident about fishing multiple flies and droppers then don't. Fish a single fly confidently, you have already caught on various flies so that is good. Have a good look at the water, look at where others are fishing. When you start, don't cast far. Cover the water in a fan type shape and vary the depth allowing the fly to sink. Then increase the distance and do the same again. Vary your retrieve. If you get nothing after doing this several times and with several flies then move somewhere.

If you are not sure about something then ask another angler. We are all on the same side and people don't mind giving advice. Anglers like to help each other in my experience. You will get help about your flies if you are not sure. If another angler catches a fish, go over, introduce yourself, tell them you are new and ask politely if they would mind telling you how they caught it. You will get good advice, I have even been given flies when I have asked.

I'm sure you will have a great time. Let us know how you get on.

Tight lines!

Nick.

I've been there twice now and found naturals the better option rather than egg flies and blobs although a white minkie stripped roly poly style can have big fish bow waving after your fly

The first lake on your left as you go in is rather difficult. It is the speciman lake and everyone seems to have a bash at them at first which can put them down a bit. I would suggest taking a right and concealing yourself beside the trees on the long thin lake, names are not my strong point, and casting a small dry out on a long leader.

The next lake has some cracking fish in it. I've hooked several underneath the trees near the island on small sedges and buzzers work great here.

The other lake is a bit dour but careful approach and presentation should give you a chance. Seen a 6lb+ rainbow not 2 feet from the shoreline.
