Nymphs, larvae etc do spend most of their time on the bottom, amongst stones, gravel, mud and weed as part of their life cycle. However, nymphs of the upwinged flies also ascend through the water column to hatch and are intercepted by trout on the way, as are the pupae of chironomids. Nymph are also taken as they hatch in the surface as 'emergers'. So yes, in effect, nymphs take trout at all levels.
