Default Waterproofer

I have a few wading jackets 'breathable'... and they ALL let water through... I have tried Nixwax spending £'ssss on upteen applications and other waterproofing agents to no avail.... I am now considering 'Waxing' them like the old Barbour jackets unless someone can help me with some 'miracle' solution... HELP!!!!!!

Try Fabsil first, just brush the stuff on. May remove the breathability but good waterproofing stuff.

Grangers Fabsil is designed to waterproof fabrics. I used to use it on tent canvas brushed on.They do a spray on airosol which is useless.

Waxing will not allow the jacket to breathe anymore, it'll waterproof it though if it's applied correctly. Some 'proofers' need to be tumble dried at, I think, 30 degrees C to be effective, especially Grangers but Nikwax products shouldn't. I've just had two weeks walking and fishing in a very wet Torridon area and the boots etc are all getting lots of TLC with a variety of lotions and potions.

Sometimes you need to clean the item properly first before reproofing (Nikwax and Grangers do products for this) as dirt etc will make it wet out more (rather than bead up) and water can then permeate the fabric, or you can get a lot more condensation on the inside which will make it feel as though it's letting in water.

I think for breathable fabrics the stuff you need is Ibsil.

I've coated tents, brollies, rucksacks, bags and lightweight jackets with Fabsil and it has done it's job. Bought a gallon (5ltrs for purists) tin years ago.

Hi,have you tried "drying" the jackets in a tumble dryer or ironing them with the iron on its lowest setting after using the nikwax the heat reactivates the dwr finish. Not being funny but are they leaking or could it just be condensation?

Captain, I've had similar problems with some of my gear, think I'm going to sort out sending them to here Prices - DiverDave's Wader Repairs as soon as I get chance as heard great things about what they do, might try some of the Ibsil stuff first though.

Why don't you waterproof your skin instead? It might just work?
Beauty, skincare, products, exfoliate, sun damage; Waterproof your Skin

Somehow my two dogs got hold of my Musto coat and now it only has one sleeve
The coats now in the bin

Martin - serious point here.

First wash the jacket in pure soap (nikwax tech wash is good)

Then, and only then...

Reproof in TX Direct.

Spin then tumble on a very low heat.

I appreciate you have tried the Nik Wax products - but the 'pores' of the textile need to be cleaned in pure soap - if you have used detergent (ie washing powder) at any point then the garment will leak - without any doubt at all, whatever you proof it with.

Oh.... if you have used detergent to clean it, I would suggest you wash it a couple of times to clear it out.

All the best
