Traditionally the lower number would be a double taper rating, so your 5/6, for example would take a WF#6.

I hope that helps

Bit of a debatable subject that, this recent thread goes into some detail about dual ratings.

Is this a sweeping statement or not

If you decide on trying out with a cheap line, John Norris do one that wont break the bank. (Probably won't last for ever, but cheap)

Fair point DN,but at the end of the day only Billy can decide which # suits him and the rod.If it were me id do what he said and buy a 4/5 and put #5 on it,same as if i bought a 5/6 id stick a #6 through it.

Both will cast a #5 you would probably feel the rod loading better on the 4/5# but depending on your target fish ie small river or stillwater etc the 4/5 # will be a fairly short rod in the shaky the xt has a 9' 5# which would be fine for a bit of both (not too small a river though)it might struggle in a strong wind or big flies for distance but is a nice wee rod put a leeda profil on it and a couple of pirates lines and boom nice set up, cheap as chips

Ditto

However the variation in line weights that exist between similar rated lines is quite marked... If you fish with premium lines it can cost more in 'line trials' than the cost of the rod in the first place

Again spot on DN . Threw trial and loads of error ive stuck with Rio Golds on my #6 rod, because it's a tad heaver than a standard #6 so i can feel it loading.Even though i cast fair line out ( not a distance caster though ) i like to know whats happening
