Default Hook size

Oh great and knowledgeable ones, can you answer this newbie question please.

Does hook size matter, physics suggests a wee fish would have issues taking a large fly, what about a big fish and a wee fly, would they bother and can the hook take it, could you catch a 5Lber plus on a size 18 or smaller.

I'm building up flies, in general on still waters what size (s) are recommended

I've caught 3oz wild brownies on size 8 long shank muddlers and 7lb rainbows on size 16 dries, so size doesn't really matter, only the fish will be able to let you know on the day

I try to match the hook size to the size of what the fish are eating not the size of the fish. You would be amazed at how big a fly a small trout can fit in its mouth and how small a fly you can land a big trout on if you play it properly.

I've had a 72cm rainbow on a size 20 gnat and tiny little browns less than three inches long on size 10 wooley b*ggers. The only difficulty with large trout on small hooks is they can straighten or tear loose more easily than a large hook so you can't power the fish in. Match the size of what the trout are eating and you can't go far wrong no matter what the size of the fish.

Take care

Terry
