Well there you go. I'm still waiting on some tapered leaders arriving but last night I thought I'd have a go with a dry anyway. I cobbled together a leader of what I had available, 3' 10lb fluoro, 4' 8lb mono, 3' 4lb mono and stuck on a cracking winged gnat, tied by a mate of mine. First couple of casts and it was lost to the trees. Tied on a winged brown thing with a muddler look to it, which was one of the free ones that came with the rod kit, ginked in up and carried on, ducking trees and as deep as the aldi (got to start somewhere) thigh waders would take me.
Waddling up stream the usual light splashes of salmon parr all aroung when I heard a slightly more substantial plop in the water about 10yards ahead under the next overhanging tree. Second cast landed in the general area and watching the floating brown thing like a hawk, I was gobsmacked when there was a splash and it disappeared!! It took me what seemed like an eternity to realise what was happening but at last I had the savvy to lift the rod. I couldn't believe it was still on! I don't think there was anyone around but if there was I appologise for the outburst of "That was F***ing magic".
I pulled it in and found it was my first 'proper' wee river brown trout (not parr). A cracking wee fella only about 7" in length but beautifully marked and MINE! Caught casting upstearm with me deliberately covering him and on a DRY!!
What a feeling - it was brilliant. I get what the river fishing's all about now. Can't wait to get out and try again. Hopefully the new leaders will make it even better. At 46 I'm a late starter but hey I plan to catch up quickly!!
Big thanks to all who replied to earlier posts with advise on upstream fishing.
Just BRAW!!
Bart
